Well Come to The Toyota World.
I will be doing a lift myself in a few weeks.
Sonoran Steel Inc. makes a variety of lift kits for 3rd Gen 4Runners (96-02).
The lift I will be doing is System #1,
But I will be doing a lot of off-road trips.
System #7 is a mild lift that works very well for Daily Drivers, but still can be brought onto the trails.
If you are just looking to get it up and leveled out to stock, might want to consider getting 99-00 coils.
The reason I say this is because the 99&00 year 4Runners are an inch higher then the 96-98 runners.
Just a few suggestions, I am sure others will chime in eventually.

Hello and welcome.
Here's a brief summary on lifts. There are 3 basic ways to go.
1. Body lift. This lifts the body away from the chassis by putting spacer blocks in the body mounts.
2. Spacer lift. This is a spacer that goes on top of the coil springs and lifts the chassis and body up.
3. Suspension lift. This involves replacing the coils springs and shock absorbers with new and larger ones. Again, lifting the chassis and body up.
You can do combinations of all these. Each serves slighly different purposes and needs and of course costs will also vary. Fitting taller tires also helps.
There are thousands of threads on the forum discussing lift kits and stuff, so if you use the search function here you will be sure to get all the info you could ever want aswell.

If you're just looking for an inch or two I would stick with a suspension kit and not worry about a body lift. I bought my OME suspension from Toytec Lifts and couldn't be happier.

yes Toytec Lift are great if you just want a 2" to 3" inch lift. alot members have argued about if being used off road, but on road its is great.

Im running a 2.5in spacer on my coils and im still running the stock shocks. You should be fine with the OMEs and stock shocks, but most people recomend to replace the shocks around 100,000 miles. So you would save some good shop time if you did it all at once.

I have been searching for a thread the discusses the advantages of each kind of lift and I have not found anything yet. can some one point me in the right direction?

And if you your going to take it on trials how hard core of trails are you planning to run?
If your just going to be a street queen, A bl is your best lift.
You look a little higher and you can get a larger tire underneath.
If you are looking to just do some minor wheeling and again don't feel like spending the money, a spacer lift will be another alternative, and again you can get a larger tire underneath.
A full suspension lift where you change out springs and shocks gives you a different ride and again lifts you higher.
Again larger tires.
but also there are different suspension options such as long travel. which gives you more articulation and a plusher ride.
those are just a few options, its really more a matter of searching to what you will be doing.
I searched for a lift that was best for heavy duty off-road use.
I try to hit the trails as much as possible.
so.
I needed something durable that would go a long way for me.
