96 Spacer Lift questions

ok before the burns fly. haha i just wanted the a-ok from someone because every 4runner is different... and im on a budget and want the most lift i can get.

is it okay for me to run a 3in spacer since i have a 96 with the smaller coils compared to lets say a 99 highlander.

or should i stay with 2.5's?

dont want to grenade cv's like there goin out of style

and one more question about diff drops...
necessary or just extra peace of mind?
ive seen both responses whats your opinon?

i talked to a local shop and they said they have installed 3" tuff country tacoma spacer w/diff drop, and then put downey coils on the rear. quoted me installed for 700. i think i want to go the ome route and do the install my self. feedback would be appreciated
 
Nothing wrong with spacer's. Many ppl will recommend a coil lift because the spacers won't ride as well and will wear your stock coils out a lot faster. If you decide to go with a 3in spacer in the front then def get the diff drop. I would recommend a diff drop for any lift of 2.5in+, it's cheap insurance and peace of mind. No one wants to risk it and end up with a 100+ CV axle change. Checkout toytec.com They have some good lifts both spacer/coil and all coil lifts. They would be in the same price range that wer mentioned as well.
 
spacers with ARB??

ive been looking at toytecs lifts and just wanted a response besides the information on there website some people will tell you what you want to hear to buy their product.

how will a 3in spacer lift hold with an ARB? anyone running this or are you running the ARB or TJM's with new front coils?

Don't think I've heard of anyone running a spacer with an arb or a tjm. The 4th gen crowd might be better to ask about that. I that a lot more 4th gen owners use spacers up front. Not really sure how well it would hold up with the extra weight on the compressed coils.

i also have a few questions about lifts... first, what is the difference between the light, medium, and heavy duty coils that OME offers?also, would you reccomend a coil lift all around, or coils in the back and spacers in the front. its only an 80 dollar difference. lastly, what is the diff drop, does that just add extra support, or does it affect the height of the lift? sorry i am asking all these questions...

From what I gathered.
Light duty front is for stock bumper and light off roading.
Light duty rear is for stock bumper, light off roading and no towing.
Medium front is for an aftermarket bumper like ARB or TJM (a winch?) and moderate off roading.
Medium rear is for towing light duty stuff or a custom rear bumper or moderate off roading.
The heavy duty is for heavy custom bumpers, winches, towing heavy tongue weight stuff or carrying things like extra tires, gas, water, or supplies. These would be great for a serious off road rig. These should really only be used up front with custom control arms like Total Chaos or Camburg because of the force they exert IMO.
Oh yeah.... it would be to your great benefit to invest in a Haynes Repair Manual from Autozone or Napa. Read it like a book and it will help you out alot.
The diff drop lowers the front of the front differential so the CV angle is closer to stock. You'll have to see a diagram to familiarize yourself with these parts.

id probably need heavy duty in the rear, cause id be towing several sizes of boats, water trailer for work, and 4wheelers, and a set of light duty shocks in the front....

Not sure what size boats you will be towing and what not but I have the 890's out back (medium duty) and I have towed close to 3000lb (trailer and material combined) and the rear only squatted about 1" and still rode pretty good.
 
I guess I have the light duty coils, so i think you would definitely be fine with the medium duty coils. That is the same lift I have, but with 881/890 instead of 882/890. I don't think you will have any problems, but if you go with 882s and the top-out spacer up front that may be a bit much on the CV shafts. If you don't plan to add a front bumper, I would get the 881s with top-out and 891s in the back.
 
Agree with trd_4runnin.

Unless you are under constant heavy load the heavy duty rears should not be used. The medium duty rears are what I am going to get for everyday use, off roading and towing a few times a month. I think they would be the good choice for you.

I also plan on getting the 881 with 10mm top outs too. Make sure you get one 5mm trim packer to level the drivers weight in the front left. Let us know how the install goes.
