lift questions

so heres whats goin on...

i have an 04 sport ed. my shop told me my right rear shock is leaking pretty bad.

i was thinking about getting a lift on the truck in the spring. didnt know what the difference between an entire lift kit or just spacers was.

can i keep the x-reas suspension?

should i replace the shock now or wait til i lift it. will i need different shocks when i lift it?

wasnt tryin for a huge lift, just a few inches 2-3ish. was tryin to keep my same tires. i have 265/65/17 cooper discoverer ATRs.

kinda new here...helps appreciated.

Hey Steve,

Spacer kits are exactly what they say. There are two kits everyone here pretty much goes with; either Cornfed or Daystar. Difference between the two are the Cornfed's are aluminum stock and Daystar is polyurethane. In general they are placed both between your spring and strut and also on top of the strut assembly. Bonus with this setup is that you can keep XREAS if you really want to.

The next step is to look into an Old Man Emu lift which runs around $6-700. This is the kit that most go to after they're looking to upgrade from spacers. Basically they replace your front struts with a new lifted strut and spring combo up front and a new seperate spring and shock for the rear. Also look into Toytec. They also have a lot of options to consider. This type of lift is probably the best choice for you. For what it's going to cost to replace an X-Reas shock plus the price of a basic spacer setup, you might as well go this route. Pretty much every one that ditches the X-Reas setup will tell you that's it well worth it in the end.

And lastly, to go king of the hill is to do a coil over setup from such companies like Total Chaos, Camburg Racing, Sway-A-Way, etc. A bit pricey; you're looking at about $1000+ for just a front shock setup, but most will swear they'll never go back. But this is mostly suited for high speed offroading.

thanks bro. thats what i was lookin for. didnt know if i wantd to go with lift kit or just spacers.

guess ill haave to call around to get some real quotes and compare.

im thinkin that my shock SHOULD be covered in the addtl bumper to bumper warranty i got with the truck. still has 4more yrs on the warranty.

dunno if anyone knows the answer to this but would lifting the truck void my warranty? its not thru toyota as that one expired. its one of those aftermarket ones thru the dealer.

Whether or not the lift will void your warranty can be hit or miss. Call your Ext. War. Policy holder and see what the have to say about it. If you do just go ahead and do it, it may be up to the discretion of the repair shop or dealer on how they'll procede with a claim.

yeah ill do that. still dont know how much lift to get without having to get bigger tires.

just found out that a lift would void the warranty on the parts that the lifts affects.

is that neccesarily bad? just trying to weigh out my options with what to do.

No not really. They're kind of saying that if you mess up the suspension (say a weekend out 'wheeling) they're not going to cover that. In that case, that would have to be some hardcore damage then, and that most likely may even be denied with a factory setup. Also, they're obviously not going to cover aftermarket parts on your ride as well for whatever reason at all.

Honestly, I would go with something like the OME lift. It's a solid choice I don't think you'll regret. Go to Wheeler's Offroad or look around the Toytec website and find some something to your liking. When I get around to doing my lift I'll definitely be getting rid of the X-Reas.
