Lift / Rubbing Issue

So after searching the forums, I can't find the answer to my question. Going to be doing a 3" lift pretty soon and cant decide on tire size. I know I am going to have to trim some pieces.

I want to go with either 295/70/17 or 285/75/17. Has anyone ran a 285/75/17? It is taller but a little bit thinner than the 295/70.

So, my question, is the width or the height of the tire causing the rubbing issues?

And has anyone done a write-up on the body mount chop? or relocation?

I think BFLAN did a body mount chop and gusset. There are plenty of write ups at FJ Cruiser forums and Tacoma forums. I'm sure there are even some here under the 4th gen threads.

Width vs height causing more rubbing? Well Harper is running 305/65R17's, those are 12" wide and 32.6" tall. He only had to move the front fender liner forward. So in your case it's mostly gonna be the height that causes more rubbing than the width. It will also depend on which width wheels you choose. Having 9" wide wheels might cause more tire rubbing than an 8" wide wheel.

Thanks for the reply! Im going with a 8" wide wheel so I guess I may do a trial with the 285/75/17's and see how it looks / how much it rubs...

Why not go w 285/70/17's .

From what I gathered here should be fine. Why start hacking on stuff for that little difference.

I would agree with Falls. 285/70/17 will be your best bet. You will need to cut off the plastic triangles on the front fender and remove the mud flaps front and rear for full stuff conditions.

As a data point I use to run 275/70/17 on stock wheels with no rubbing and no trimming other than the plastic triangles. This is with a 2.5" susp lift.

I now run 315/70/17 on 9x17 with 4.5BS and -12mm offset and needed to do the body mount chop, beat down the wheel well seam behind the front tire and cut into the lower 1/3rd of the trailing edge of the front fenders. In the rear I had to cut (reshape) the trailing edge of the fender by about 1" from bottom to top. Lost both front and rear mud flaps. This is with a 3.25" susp lift and 1.5" body lift. I still get some rubbing but Im working on that lol.
