Lift thats best for me.

So I did a bunch of 4-wheel trails this weekend in my runner, and after high-centering on a few rocks, mud piles, and ruts... decided I should invest in a lift kit. But whats a good lift height.

I've been looking at the daystar 2.5/1.5 for a while and it seems like the most popular option on this forum, that is that mainly what DDers do just for a nice lifted look? Does that 2.5/1.5 make that big a difference or should I go higher.

Keep in mind, I'm not a serious offroader, but i do my fair share, and it would be nice to keep my under carriage alive a little longer.

I used to live in CO and ran a bunch of those mountainous trails. Stock too!

With that said, I honestly think you should just go with Toytec Ultimate lift. They're "local" to you (Denver) and it will give you the best clearance of 3". I ran Toytec's spacer lift for years and it was awesome but I now wish I just went with Coilovers. Spacers are going to cause more stress in the long run and is a much more technical install anyway.

Good luck with the build!

Any plans to up-size your tires? Too much lift and your tires might look tiny. 3" is about the maximum lift up front before you run out of alignment adjustment so you need to think about that. The biggest spacer lift that I know of is the Cornfed 3/2. Something besides a spacer lift at about the same cost (depending on what you can find coils for) would be the FJ coil swap... I netted 2" of lift up front (FJ coils + 1/2" spacer), but the spring rate is a little higher so it helps a bit when off-road. Just another option for you.

I was also considering swapping for fj coils, would but that wouldn't change my height would it?

I'm thinking of upgrading to some 17" wheels... however big i can get without having to dremmel the wheel well

The daystar spacer lift is great for the off road look but does very little as far as performance benefits. It all depends on your budget, that Toytec Ultimate would do good or for less money a full OME setup isn't a bad choice.

is the toytec ultimate lift the $1100 dollar one?!?

the toytec does sound expensive until you truly understand what your getting in the long run, the spacer lifts add stress as a10 said to your suspension for life which infinite stress is never good, with that said i just went to my shed to make sure i still had my FJ coils i used to own one and these coils have 10k miles on them before i switched them with lifted coils notice the third rung back i wiped the dust off to give you an idea the condition they are in let me no

Bilstein adjustable 5100 all around - fronts set at .85 + the toytec spacer (.5 net 1'') should give you 1.85'' up front and a 1'' spacer for the rear. This is what I'm planning to do shortly. If they made a .75'' rear, i'd use that, but it doesn't exist.

I think its a good bang for the buck by getting both the preload spacer in the billies + 1'' net topout to keep good geometry and ride with nicer dampening with the bilsteins.

Keep us updated.

Yes, the Toytec Ultimate Kit (3" lift) is the $1,100 one online. From what I've read, everyone that installs it loves it and they sell a high quality product and are very helpful!

It seems the FJ coils provide about 1" lift and help while 4wheeling, but has anyone put FJ shocks in aswell, what will that do?

also, what do you want for the coils?

There are 9 guys on the chart (in the link I posted) that are using the FJ shocks. If I remember correctly, there are 3 levels of FJ shocks... base, Bilstein, and Trail Team... each level being a little more firm. I have a set of the base 4x4 shocks with 895 miles on them... PM me if you're interested. There are tons of options, as you're finding, and it can be a bit over-whelming, but stick with it and do your research. I spent probably a couple of months going through the "Lift and Tire" thread to see what I liked and then would research all of the components. I was going with the DS 2.5/1.5 until I read about the FJ swap and I'm really glad I did! Can't beat the improvement for the price!

You dont mention your current shock set up so I assume it is not XREAS. If it is then you have another decision to make.
Using the Toytec system means replacing XREAS. If you want to keep the XREAS system then a spacer lift is in order.

We put the Toytec on our FJ and it is great. Excellent lift for the offroading we do which is not very serious.

I have XREAS system on my 4Runner so I will be going with Daystar at least as long as the XREAS system is still functional. Then I will change to Toytec.

I was up on Rampart Range last weekend. It has a lot of bad washboard sections on it. The XREAS system made a huge difference on the way the runner drove. The ride was a lot smoother and more controlable. That is when I decided to hold off on Toytec until the XREAS dies.

If you have regular shock system, then Toytec is a great option.

I'm thinking of upgrading to some 20" wheels... however big i can get without having to dremmel the wheel well

When you stated this it sounded like you wanted 20" rims.

I run the daystar and I love it. However I would recommend getting some rear shocks cause i have over extended them a couple times with some of the drops offroad. Front is fine though. People saying spacers stresses the suspension are dumb. The geometries of the suspension are the same between spacers and something like the toytec...what are you talking about? the spacer gives the factory ride which people like my wife appreciate. Some longer rear shocks are the only thing I would change with my daystar spacer lift and those are fairly cheap. Good luck!
