Guys (& Gals?),

I have a 2001 4Runner 4x4 that's currently stock. In a couple weeks, I'll be installing a Revtek 3" suspension lift and a set of Bridgestone Dueler A/T REVO tires in the LT 285/75/R16 with a D class rating.

Some concerns and questions .....

1) I have heard rumblings of suspension lifts in 4Runners causing the front CV boots to leak. Is this true? Any stories to share? If so, how was this problem resolved?

2) I want to replace my spare with this new sized tire. I read on this forum that there are some space issues if you have the stock tow package, which I do. I don't expect to ever have to tow something and am more than willing to remove the tow apparatus. Will this give me the space I need to fit an equal-sized spare under the rig?

3) By chance .... has anyone out there done this exact modification to their 3rd generation 4Runner and, if so, how did it go? Any complaints? Positive feedback?

I love my rig and don't want to comprimise it's reliability and stability, if I can avoid it.

I know someone else more helpful will reply here ... but just to help you out some, I have a 4th gen. with xreas, and I installed the 3" Revtek lift by myself ... it took awhile to figure out how to work around the xreas line, but after that it went very quickly and easily. The fact that you don't have to deal with xreas since you have a 3rd gen. should be very encouraging if you have any inclination to take on that project yourself. I know a lot of other 3rd gen. 4runners have the 3" revtek, and have done just fine with it. As long as you don't go any higher than 3", the cv joints should be okay as far as I understand.

It should also be reassuring to know that those spacer companies make specific sizes because they know those sizes are acceptable on the cv joints and other components. That's why you don't see places like Revtek or Daystar selling lift kits much taller than 3". They know what they're doing, and if you use the products as they intend them to be used, then everything should be okay. Just try to stay at or below 3" to be safe.

1: You are only adding 3" of the Revtek spacer lift so you have no worries here. Anything more and expect breakage of parts.

2: You should be able to fit the 285's under there. All you have to do is deflate the tire until it reads 0psi. Make sure you reinflate the tire when you use it. You might be able to fit it w/ the tire inflated but I'd try it out.

3: I'd say about a few thousand (is so) have done the spacer lift either using Cornfed Suspension (my favorite), Revtek or Daystar. Everyone loves it because it's the cheapest lift available that is the most cost effective lift out there. It's good for trail riding as well! Can't beat it.

I had installed the OME 881 up front and OME 891 back, and OME struts and shocks. I gained 1" front, and 2" back. If I install tires, it will be 265/75/R16. (32")
I know I will rub up front if I get 285/75R16 (33")

If I was to do it over again, I would.

Front: OME 882 3" coils
Back OME 892 3.5" coils
285/75R16 (33")

AND maybe Procomp 4"
that would give a total of 7" and
35" Muds

Your 2001 is a 3rd gen just like mine, I don't know if you will rub with 285s on a Revtek.

Thanks folks!

I just wanted to thank those who replied to my original post. The 3" Revtek kit was installed last weekend. I love the new profile of the rig. It sits noticeably taller and the best thing ..... still handles the same as before (on road). The new ride is nice without noticeable stiffening. I haven't been off road with the new lift yet but don't expect compromised performance, with the exception of reduced spring travel while bouldering which may cause a tire to lift off the ground under certain conditions. We'll see.

My original tires 265/70/R16 look rather puny in the wheel well now with the lift, but I have plans to install the 285 Revos this weekend or next. I scored a great price at Price Club (Costco) .... $152/ea installed. After that, the lift will be a total of 4".

Anyway, so far so good. I love the new look .... it kicks a**. The best thing (in my opinion) is that my Runner still has a "stock" look but when next a real stock Runner, is clearly different with a higher profile. Now I look across at the Ford and Chevy truck drivers at the stoplight versus looking up at them! The little things in life.

I may try to post a photograph soon. It will my first attempt .... ever. Yikes!
