Lift Work, two days?

I was told by local shop here in Toronto, Canada that it will take 2 days to install ICON Stage 1 lift including allignment. Really?

Based on what I read here, it does not take that long specially if it's done by "professionals/4X4 experts".

Any thoughts gentlemen?

I'm an idiot and it took me, my father and my brother about 7 hours including multiple breaks. They must have too many other appointments, otherwise, they'd throw 2 guys at it for several hours and be done with it. Should take a competent shop much less time than it took me in my driveway.

Good luck, and try to find a second opinion if there's another shop around.
 
That isnt uncommon but its because of how they schedule their days not that it cant be done in one. Most people that install in a day still arent aligning the same day though. If you have a reliable shop id put up with the wait to get it done right.

I left my truck for a couple days as i knew the shop would do it right. I also had to wait 3 weeks to get in, but no install issues as a few others have had elsewhere.

The shop is highly recommended by 4X4 communities out here. The owner of the shop mentioned that the allignment is done at another shop.

they have probably never dealt with a kdss setup IF you even have kdss or x-reas.. and wanna take their time and read up on it..
 
I just had a Toytec Boss kit along with new Light Racing Upper Control Arms installed at a local 4x4 shop. I believe it took about 5 hours including alignment to have everything done.

I'm going to guess they don't want to be rushed and since alignment is done at another shop they plan to install lift day 1 and get it aligned the next day. I bet they only plan on taking 4 hours or so to install the lift itself.

Exactly. Plus four hours shop time is like twelve hours regular time. Example: They get started on your lift then the guy has to talk to a customer. Gets back on your vehicle for an hour then he has to test drive another vehicle. Lunch. Works on yours for a bit then has to help another guy lift or hold something. Finishes yours in four hours yet it took eight real hours.
 
I'm just north of Toronto and will be looking for someone to lift my TE in the spring. please let me know who you used and how it went.

Regardless of how long they have it, it seems to me a more relevant question would be how many hours labor are they charging you?

And another, even if they're "a 4X4 shop", have they worked on a 4R before?

This is exactly how it works in most shops. Think of the 2 days they estimated as a worse case scenario. It's not something that I would want rushed through. I lifted both 4runners myself and both took around 6-7 hours but that was with a ton of breaks and watching the kiddos as well. Plus, I like to hand torque every bolt about 3 times and wipe down the parts and tools as I go. Then the next day I drove them 90 miles to align them. So really, both of mine took 2 days as well. If I was completely uninterrupted and already at the shop, I pretty sure I could knock the whole thing out in about 5 hours including alignment. The uninterrupted part never happens for me though.

After high school I was a bodyman for three years as a painter and frame guy. Didn't go to college to be an engineer until I was 21. Learned a lot in those years lol.

I worked in a truck accessory shop for over ten years. Everything from vent visors to full on suspension, bumper, flatbed fab work plus alarms and alignments. It was always a battle with the salesmen who would, for example, charge a customer 4 hours and tell them it would be completed in exactly 4 hours. Reality was, 4 shop hours IS all day. I learned to quote more time than it will really take. Most people have no idea how much time stuff really takes though.
 
Mine is going in next week for lift, tires & alignment. It is scheduled in for two days. I thought that seemed long too but I figure that they need to pad the time in case there are any issues. It is certainly not two days' work but there are no doubt jobs before and after mine that can eat up time.
 
these threads drive me crazy. the work is easy and there are no specialized tools needed. if you have a floor jack, a socket set, and a flat spot the coil overs can be done in 3-4 hours, and the rear lower arms will take another hour or so (a ratchet strap is useful here). save yourself hundreds of dollars and do it yourself.

I was quoted between CAD $2500-3000 for ICON STAGE 1, LR UCA, allignment and labor.

Good question, did not asked him if he did worked on 5th Gen 4Runner before.

However, I've seen their own FJ and it seems they worked on Toyota trucks based on Toyota club forum. All good reviews about their work so I decided to contact the owner.

Still researching though...

2 days is crazy... chances are they will finish the install in one day (its not that complicated).

The second day, it will sit for a few hours at the installer until someone drives it over to the alignment shop, then sit some more until after lunch, finally get aligned, then sit some more until someone can drive it back over to the installer w/the additional paperwork.

If you want to speed things up... go get it aligned yourself. That way, you can first put a few hundred miles on it (take it off-road too) and let it settle in a bit before you align it.
