Limited GPS

Hi all, has anyone figured out a way to use the GPS while moving. I cannot enter a destination through either voice commands or touch screen while moving. Now I know this is a bad idea for me to do while driving, but my wife in the passenger seat is fully capable of this. I find this very frustrating.

Anyone know how to do this?

Not sure if anyone ever cracks the toyota nav systems, but I had a car stereo shop install a mod in my infiniti G35 nav system which now allows me to operate it while moving. It cost about $100 and it was mainly labor.

Certainly not true of all companies and Nav systems - I've been driving Saturns and Acuras for several years that have no limits on what can be done while driving (I have four of them right now and none are limited). I was kind of surprised to discover this on the Toyotas. I almost never use the Nav system anyway so it is no really big deal to me, but still it is too bad they won't allow the passenger to operate it. I will use it even less now, and the only real reason I went with a Nav was the increased audio controls that are on it, which I do like...

Screen Hack

There may be a software "hack" than you can use to overide. I use them all the time for my 2004 Limited and the wife's 2007 Camry GPS units. They are a bit of a PITA bescaue you have to use them everytime you start the car and turn on the NAV (before you start driving) or when your car is stopped at a light, etc. The hack is usually unique to the particular model of GPS and involves pushing the screen at certain locations (usually the corners) in a certain sequence. Sooner or later someone will find out the hack for the fifth generation. If you have time, do a search and see the hacks that have been used in the variuous Toyota and Lexus GPS models and try some of them as a starting point. Find out what the hack is for your model and become famous on the forum!

Not that this helps your situation, but the BMWs I have driven allow you to operate the nav while in motion, the Benzes do not. .

It's all about liability for the company. Which is why you have to press "I agree" on the contract everytime you start it up. It isn't completely useless when in motion, as you can change route type and the destination to home (and I think emergency destinations such as hospitals, etc.) I have a standalone Garmin I use in my current car and I disabled the default "lock while in motion." It made a big stink about it and said something about not being liable for accidents...

Seems a few people here have already figured out a workaround:

Good luck.

wait a second. i do NAV voice commands while the truck is moving all the time in my Limited.

Hence why I never paid the premium prices most car companies demand for Nav systems when I can use my cheapo Tom Tom GPS while on the move.

Past Toyota navigations involved cutting the VSS wire and adding a switch. The map scrolls erractically after 30 seconds if the GPS lock determines there's movement with no input from the VSS and the lockout resumes.

Parking brake ground doesn't work on the OEM nav.

Well?

Its an old string, but has anybody found a hack to allow the use of the GPS on 5th gen 4Runners while the vehicle is in motion? Toyota customer service has been completely useless

There are ways to modify the factory wiring with a switch to trick the radio that you're not in motion. See here

I used this, so I didn't have to cut the factory wiring. I also modified this harness to allow on demand backup camera.

Hi rossit,

I just checked that in my service manual wiring plot sheets and if it was just a matter of jumping a 12V switch in the console P.R.N.D. shiftier, I would tell you! But doing that would be like over-riding the 'Engine Immobilizer Anti-theft System'; it's all tied into CAN-bus L & H communication system! No easy work-around hack for this system without putting the system at considerable risk! 'Best to you',
