Limited Illuminated Running Boards

I took out my parents 2005 Limited tonight and the lighted running boards were acting crazy. If I had the truck running and somebody opened the door and got out, the running boards stayed lit for around 15-20 seconds after the door closed and the interior lights went out (even if I started driving). If the door is opened when the truck is off, the running board lights went out with the interior lights. Is this the way they are supposed to work or is there something wrong? I can't compare it to my truck because I don't have the illuminated running boards on my sport! Thanks for any help.

Using the installation instructions (http://www.toyotaparts4u.com/Lighted 4Runner Boards0001634006.pdf), and if I'm reading the wiring diagrams correctly (it's been a long time so I may not), it appears that the lights tap into the ignition switch light. Try checking against that to see if they are behaving similarly.

Thanks for the post jharris2. I just ran down to experiment and the running boards are still illuminated when the ignition switch is off. This is only when the truck is running. When it is not running, the lights on the running boards and the ignition switch light go off together.

Then the circuit must also trigger off of the open door or the interior lights. On my 2003 model, there are lights in the doors that are on only when the door is open. When the truck is off, do the running boards turn on and off with these or with the other interior lights?

It's sounding like they are behaving normally, but I'm curious as to which set of lights they are tied to.

The running boards turn off with the interior lights. For example, the interior lights stay on for a few seconds after you unlock the truck. The running board lights will stay on for just as long as those lights when the truck is not running. The lights on the door only go on when the door is opened and go off immediately after the door is shut. When the truck is not running, the running boards are definitely tied to the interior lights.

OK, so it sounds like they are working as designed. Doesn't sound like the way either of us would design it, but that's a different topic.
