Limited or SR5

Nobody has mentioned that only the Limited will not bind bad on tight turns like parking etc. in snow. All the others have to be put in 4WD for traction and the system works against you instead of for you. Terrible stupid setup. Ok now flame me but I owned one and it sucked bad any time it snowed. I bought it and got rid of it after the first winter. That's the old 2014 SR5 in my picture.

Not flaming. Can you elaborate? It seems SR5 in 4wd should be the same as LE with the center diff locked.

The Limited operates in 4High (H4F) with the center diff open (no binding) in everyday operation. Also, in the Limited you have to spin the dial to H4L to lock the center diff, which is the same as putting the SR5 into 4-High.

If you don't like the chrome front and don't need the ventilated seats the buy a 2010-2013 Limited. My 2010 doesn't have the fake wood grain either..

This is not exactly true, the Limited in H4F does not have an *open* center diff, it has a *limited slip* electronically-controlled center diff. Minor but significant difference.

As you said, Limited's "H4L" is identical to the SR5's "H4", and "L4L" is identical to "L4".

vjack - I stand corrected.....
dsimonl - The SR5 will be just fine in the snow with running it in H4... my 3rdGen does great in H4 in the snow/mud or anything slippery.. you just might need to shift in and out of H4 depending on your speed, and surface condition to avoid binding.

Similar position, just bought a 2016 limited. Ventilated seats were a plus but price wise...it was a steal compared to 2-4 year old used cars with 40k miles at only a 2k discount...Bay Area pricing sucks. Some of the creature comforts are nice if it's your daily driver.

So you are saying the SR5 sucks in the snow? That blows! We just ordered one for the Idaho winters.....

If there is enough snow to necessitate 4WD, there is enough slip between the tires and the pavement to not bind the transfer case in 4WD.

I had my 2010 SR5 for 4 winters and my Trail for 1. I leave it in 2WD most of the time even on light snow on the road. The truck is very predictable and stable with excellent traction. Drive like you have done sense and listen to what the truck is telling you. You'll know when you need 4WD.

Let me try to sum this up. Up till 2010 4 Runners had a center diff. When you put them in 4WD it was all good with no binding on tight turns. With the 2010 and up there is no center diff. and you cannot make a tight turn as to parking, getting into a drive through window, or your own garage as in my case when in 4WD. The most brilliant Toyota engineers came up with this cost cutting idea. Turn an amazing truck into a 1960's Willy. If I knew this when I bought the truck in the summer I wouldn't sound so pissed off right now and would have just bought the Limited in the first place. My bad, not. Who the hell makes a truck in 2014 for upwards of 40k that wont turn tight in 4WD? Buy what you want but be warned because I spent 8 months begging dealers to trade me out of it into a Limited without taking my first born. Finally it happened but I still lost money.

Hey guys, I'm a bit torn between these two models. I recently tested an LE and I really like all the interior features, but I don't like the bling on the outside. It really makes it look like a minivan IMO.

I will be testing the SR5 next week and see if there's much difference in the interior feeling.

One thing I don't quite get is the part-time vs full time 4wd system. Can someone explain what's the real difference between them and if it's worth getting it?

This 4runner will see some casual offroad use as we like going to the mountains. I'm not really expecting to do rock crawling or anything extreme with it.

Trail, hands down the best!!!

Limitations of AWD Mode

I am thoroughly impressed with the Multi-Mode 4WD in the 4Runner but am curious as to the limitations of, or best use of, the AWD mode. Is it to be used only as an extension of 2WD in a driving rain, dirt roads, etc. or does it have more capability before dropping in 4H mode?

My concern is stressing AWD components beyond their intended use. Anybody got some technical info on this subject?

Let me say thank you for nobody telling me to buy a Subaru or Highlander.

If all 4 tires have enough grip to the pavement to damage the transfer case, why do you need to be in 4WD?

At least here in MN, I can go from snow packed roads, to dry roads, to icy roads a dozen times on my commute. Switching out of 2WD to 4WD would suck, especially for my wife who drives it when the weather is really bad. Once of the main reasons I got the Limited.

can you replace the 20" wheels and tires on the Limited with the 17" wheels and tires on the SR5 and Trail/TRD Pro models? The wheels on the Limited seem to be thinner than the wheels on the non Limited 4runners and it looks really weird when looking at it from the front. Also does it cause rubbing if you replace the wheels?

Very good question.
I do want to make some mods right off the bat. I want an slight lift/spacer, wider tires and get rid of the bling bling rims.

I don't see many LE lift pictures in the forum but there are some really nice ones. Does anyone knows of a good build based on a LE?

There are many. Bimrunner, Harper7, phillyd2 and many more. Go to the build thread sticky and look them up.
