Limited Running Board Light Override

Anyone have a solution for disabling/overiding the running board lights? They do not appear to be connected to the interior light controls so when ever I leave a door ajar (ie. listening to the stereo while camping) They stay on the entire time. Recently, I had left a door ajar overnight (the interior lights were switched off). and by morning by battery was completly drained.

Also, it seems odd that given the automatic light control electronics, the running board and door lights illuminate during bright daylight.

Unplugging them should be pretty easy. The plug is underneath about halfway between front and back.
