I have a 16 Limited and it’s time for some new tires. I see lots of people selling the stock TRD 17s and was thinking about swapping them out. Basically going from 20s to 17s. I don’t do much serious off-roading and occasionally tow a travel trailed in New England. Any one have experience, pros and cons?

I have really been thinking about doing the same thing. Mine has 140,000 miles on it, so I’m wondering if it will be worthwhile to pay the $$ for new wheels. But it’s paid off, so I’m seriously considering it.

The low profile tires on the Limited was one of the reasons why I went with the SR5 Premium. I have blown out several tires on my previous vehicle (Mercedes Benz C Class) on I95 and I80 in New Jersey and I was pretty fed up with it. For the stupid high taxes you have to pay around here the roads should be perfect. Now I can aim for the potholes if I want instead of having to do stunt car maneuvers to avoid them

Amen to that. Had one car with low profile tires here in NJ. Never again. Thank god for the tire protection plan from the tire shop

Honestly I felt like the switch to 17's softened some of the cracks and bumps driving straight on over the 20's on road. Cornering didn't change either, I went from stock 20 to 17" with a C load AT tire.

We have gone up to RI quite a bit. I95 is super busy and I think all of the traffic between NJ, CT, RI and MA keeps that road in permanent construction and with temporary fixes. I don’t even think about pot holes anymore since I bought my 4R SR5P

I ditched the 20's years ago, the 17's definitely ride nicer on the garbage roads around here, potholes, etc. I went with 255/75/17 Duratracs, the ride is improved, and winter traction is excellent. I also feel it looks a lot nicer on 17's with some sidewall.

I went from the stock 20s to a flat black 6 spoke aggressive looking Fuel 18 (about $1,000) with 275/65/18/9 BF Goodrich All-Terrain TAs (another $1,000) and a Spidertrax 1.25" spacer ($225 for 4) and I'm really happy with everything.
That said, there was rubbing even with a 2" level/lift kit ($750) so I had to have the shop shave away some BS underneath and remove my front mudflaps. ($200).
For about 3 grand it totally changed my truck from a soccer-mom vehicle to a beast starter-kit. Adding the roof accessories, the blackout kit for the logos, and the ladder got me close to where I want to be and there's no real appreciable difference in the sound or ride, but I no longer fear potholes.

Needed to get a set of winter wheels and tires, so we got some SR5 wheels and 17-inch tires. When Spring came, we didn't want to go back to 20-inch tires, so we got another set of newer SR5 wheels. See this link:

Hello, I was wondering where you might have gotten those rims? They look like the ones that came on my 2013 FJ and I love the look. Also, did you have to modify the inner fender well? I just picked up a 2022 LTD and really don't like the ride on the 20s. Did going to 17s vastly improve the ride on your rig? Any input would be great before I pull the trigger on a mod like this.

The FJ OEM 8-hole rims (grayish color) are the same as the ones that came with the early 2010-2013 4Runner Trail edition, just a slightly different (silver) color. They both should fit any 5th gen just fine with no mods, assuming a stock tire size.

They are FJ Cruiser wheels, I can't remember the year/trim though. There are very similar 4Runner wheels but they are silver instead of gunmetal.
No fender trimming to make them fit, but depends on how big you go for tires I guess.
Ride quality was greatly improved over the 20's.
Just wondering what size tires those are and if you have a lift? Thanks.

Seems like wheel offset from 17" and 20" is not an issue. Appears it is bolt on and go-nice.
More sidewall also helps with road surface bumps absorbed into tire. And more selections of tires.
I am looking at vehicles for my wife and large wheels seem to be a promotion point for car makers.
