Limited wheels off - Trail wheels on... Poll & info (tire/wheel weight)

I picked up a set of '14 Trail wheels for my Limited last winter. I'll post a few pics of before and after which hopefully is helpful to someone at some point. I'll add a set of AT tires shortly and will update the thread with a few pics of those as well.
The weight of wheel & original Duelers were 71 lbs... Trails with Duelers came in at 70 lbs...

Poll time for kicks.... Which looks better... personally now that they're on, I don't know that one looks better than the other. But it'll be nice to have more than 3 tire choices now! :thumb:

Trail wheels look good. More rubber will give you a more supple on road feel. Unless you go LT tires. I went from 70lbs with stock to 78lbs with stealths and Lt load E tires (wheels were 6lbs lighter each and tires were 14lbs heavier each).

I actually DISLIKE the look of the large wheels on the Limited, so I think you have the ultimate setup here!

The 4Runner has a rugged off road look, so I find the large wheels out of place, IMO.

Can I ask where u picked up the Trail wheels? Ebay? Dealer? How much?


I am currently strongly considering picking up a new 4Runner, and I really like the way that either the new TRD PRO is set up (those wheels are WAY cool), or the Trail Premium.


Only problem, neither the trail or pro has a 3rd row seat available, which kinda makes it a deal killer for my wife.

I am interested in this but more on the ride quality as I have the trail wheels but am in the process of deciding between a limited and sr5 upgrade. Is there noticeable difference?

Given identical tires... the 17's have more rubber so they should ride better (more comfy) and these do. The main reason I swapped though was for a better A/T tire selection. Take a peak before you switch out to factory 20's (7" wheel)... you can only get the original Dueler and 2-3 others... none of which I wanted. Best wishes!

Those wheels were picked up here... then I sold here as well (after I traded that 4Runner). You should be able to find a set here, Craigslist, Ebay, or over on one of the FJ Cruiser sites. Good luck

How did you like the trail wheels/tires on the limited? Any notable issues/tradeoffs?

I have an '10 limited and have always been thinking of swapping to a smaller wheel diameter when it was time for new tires, which is now approaching. I like these '14 TE wheels much better than either the previous TE or SR5s, they look like they belong on your limited.

Both look great but I voted for the Trail wheels. I ditched my Limited wheels for some aftermarket wheels and tires and I couldnt be happier. The truck feels so much more planted with this setup.

I voted for the trail wheels, a few months ago I swapped my stock 20" wheels out for 17's and haven't looked back.

Interesting post. I appreciate the pictures you posted [MENTION=33946]Shawk00[/MENTION] . I have a 12 SR5 and I saw a set of 14 Trail rims with Dunlops for sale on CraigsList with on 500 miles on them and wondered what they would look like on my truck. I am just concerned about all the discussion over the quality of the Dunlops. Maybe I should just stick with the stock SR5 rim and just get new tires. Maybe if the price is right I will be sporting your look on a Blizzard Pearl!

I didn't end up keeping them long... I believe it was less than 500 miles, then I traded for our TP. The 17" wheels were noticeably better/softer over bumps at the cost of a little more "roll" in the turns. I have those wheels though on my TP and wouldn't dream of putting LE 20" wheels on it now. The lack of tire choices for those LE wheels were/are unbelievable to me. I would swap in a heart beat again and dump the 20's. I don't think I've run across anyone who regretted it. Best wishes!
