Limited XRES - How dependable?

Currently have a '10 SR5, been waiting around for the 6th Gen but not sure that is coming anytime soon. Looking at getting a '23 Limited.

Curious how the XRES system holds up over time?

I've kept this one for 13 years, longest time I have kept a vehicle, have just over 150k on it, live in the Northeast.

Wondering if over time/miles or with salt on the roads this system has problems . I would not modify the suspension.

Unfortunately they are not very dependable, but don't let this prevent you from buying the 2023! That should be under warranty. Once you go out of warranty, you can change to bilstein 5500 shocks and forget about it. 4unner limited is an excellent choice!

my original XREAS lasted about 155,000 miles. and after that I noticed a slight weep on one of the rear absorbers so I replaced all 4 corners because why not - the other 3 corners were fine. I don't believe XREAS is any less dependable than any other set ups but it is harder to work on. it was literally trouble free for almost 160k miles and 10 years, can you really complain about that??? when it's working it's a good set up. I have a 2012 and 11 years of road salt and winter and the actuators are still working and hard lines still original

people like to hate on the XREAS because it's more expensive to fix than a traditional set up, but that doesn't mean its unreliable or that it's not a good system. many people opt for a traditional set up if they have lost too much fluid and need to run new hard lines (closed system) because that's the most expensive repair. can't fault them for that it's their choice and much easier to DIY in the future for repairs or upgrades

From personal experience, the XRES is very reliable, not sure what [MENTION=485426]amir_gh[/MENTION] is talking about. most people get like 100-150k out of them which is pretty darn good for a suspension. we're at 85k and have no issues. This said, [MENTION=485426]amir_gh[/MENTION] is correct if they go in like 10 years the world is your oyster with replacement options... so I would not let that hold you back from getting a 2023.

FYI, I would not buy a 4Runner that didn't have the Xres if i were shopping for one right now.

I see a lot more posts like this than I do of folks complaining of premature XREAS failure. This certainly isnt scientific data, but it’s worth noting.

It’s a wear and tear item. As such, it’s a matter of WHEN, not IF it will fail. Too many factors contribute to accelerating failure, but I wouldnt say it’s proven itself to be unreliable. As pointed out already, it’s the cost to replace, and the inability to really service or repair that are the main complaints about XREAS.

If you want the Limited trim, don't let XREAS stop you. Its a great suspension. Don't sweat when you have to replace ii. I got Dobinson's IMS replacement from Exit Off Road for my 2020 Ltd and its even better.

2015 LTD. XREAS replaced at 100k under Toyota extended warranty. Replacement is leaking at all 4 again at 186k. I just received Eibach Pro Truck Lift Stage 2. Installing next week.

2016 Limited with 138k KM and no issues so far; living in atlantic Canada, lots of road salt and near the ocean, plus take it down fire roads a dozen times a year (no hard off-roading though).

I see a lot of people point to "common failures" but I'd like to see a side by side comparison of average lifetimes of XREAS vs non. Personally I had my '07 through 160k with no issues and my current '15 limited has 64k with no leaks. My brother just had to replace his '06 after one let go at 200k. Maybe make a note to do visual inspections more often so if one starts going you can get it early to avoid having to do the entire system, but I personally wouldn't use it as a determining factor in buying another one.

ive got a 2016 which I changed out to KINGs and a 2021 which is still stock XREAS. They will all fail at some point, just a question of when. Think of XREAs like brake pads..

People need to realize these are TRUCKS. You want a luxury ride, buy a Rolls Royce. You want to blow past people on a grade, buy sports car. Slapping XREAS on a truck to make it ride like a luxury car is a solution begging for an expensive fix down the road. Bilstein 5100s on a SR5 and call it good for 250K miles.

I sold my last 2011 Limited with 160k, no issues with the XREAS. My 2016 Limited now has 85k, also no issues.

Mine lasted about 171k miles before it started to leak/weap. I replaced everything(at around 177k miles) with a lightly used set of basic SR5 suspension. Not as great as the XREAS, but functional.
