Not sure about the matte flares but Thai is exactly right about the look of the New at the time '03 style. My folks owned a '99 and I remember saying, "Wow I really don't like the new 4runner". 2 years later I liked it enough to buy an '05 based on ruggedness, durability, reliability, cargo space ---- and styling, low and behold.

Good advice Thai, just give the new look an honest chance...and some time to sink in.

It'd be nice to see a Blizzard Pearl option for a color on the 4Runner. I had a Highlander Sport (which really wasn't) in this color and it was a *****in' sweet color. Much better than the plain old ordinary white color you see.

Based on the URL provided, I'd guess it's from a banner ad that Toyota is running on AutoWeek's website.

i am liking what i see on the spy shots. and based on the little picture of the rear hatch, i am liking the font of the emblem. but like a lot of the toyota suv's i've been seeing in the last couple years, too much use of chrome. i heavily dislike (i won't say hate) seeing those giant horizontal chrome bars with the name of whatever the toyota suv it is. most of the time just looks tacky.

Give it time...in time, everyone will appreciate the 5th gen styling. Remember, in 2003, people were having a stroke when the 4th gen came out with that bloated, black plastic fender design!

I was one of those people. I didn't like the 4th gen one by during its debut because of the gray flares and cladding. But the 4th gen grew on me and now I actually like the gray flares and cladding 4Rs because they are rare and unique, not to mention, they'll hold up much better cosmetically.

I guess the bulbous headlights non descript smooth fenders and flanks are inevitable, but please let there still be fender extensions, thats a haulmark of a Toyota SUV imo, it turns a mediocre mall rat looking SUV into a mans SUV (even if it never goes offroad...). I have seen one new LandCruiser with body colour fender extensions that looked fantastic, without them its kind of blaaaaaaa, waaaayyyy to close to Highlander in profile.

The fenders don't come out as far as the 4th gens.

What a puff piece.

He says this even though the 2wd V-6 was quoted at 17city/23 highway 19 combined. Obviously the 4 cylinder is there for "low price" and not for fuel economy.

Exactly. It is so Toyota and their dealers can advertise that the 4Runner starts at the low, low MSRP of $____. Of course, the dealers won't stock the 4-cylinder, 4-speed, 2WD automatic because they won't be able to give it away. So they'll try to upsell the customers into a V6 instead.

Sure they will! In fact the very first T4R I ever rode in was a 4 banger 2WD automatic that some thrifty lady I worked with bought new back in roughly '97 I think. Some folks just want the pure utility without the power and the 4WD - and the 5th gen has tons of room in the cargo bay to satisfy these folks. Yeah it will be slow as molasses but there are a lot of buyers (especially women) who probably don't even know or care what engine is under the hood as long as it's a quality Toyota that gets them from point A to point B
