Little Black Security System Box???

I am starting to see some intermittent issues with my security system so I took it in to the local stealer yesterday to have them look at it.

They promptly came back to me and told me that I have an aftermarket alarm system. Now since I am the second owner, I just assumed that it was OEM since it has the original Toyota key FOB's. I did question them about that and the tech told me that he looked up there and saw where this "aftermarket" system was spliced into the vehicle. So today, I took the panel off under the steering wheel to get to this system to see what brand I had. When I pulled the panel, all I found was a blue box from my Parrot Bluetooth system that attaches to my Eclipse System. But I cannot find this other "third party" unit he was talking about.

So my question is, where would the OEM alarm system be located? I find it hard to believe that someone would take out the OEM to replace it with an aftermarket unit that does the same thing.

The issues that I have been seeing is that on occasions when I activate the alarm after about 45 seconds or so, it will sound the "warning" alarm where it honks about 4 times and then resets. Then after a few more minutes it will do the same thing. It will continue to do this until I go out and unlock and open the door, I then usually just leave it unlocked since it is parked right in front of my office anyways so I am not too worried. But its everywhere else is my main concern as I just do not know when it will go off. It seems that this last month, it has been doing it more and more.

Any thoughts or suggestions would be helpful.

Also, because I could not stand the Parrot Bluetooth system, I pulled it out today so I will be selling it if anyone is interested in it. I would like to get a Sirius Radio Module to replace it.

Depending on the age of your vehicle, as to still having your warranty. I would go back to Toyota and have them show you what they see as the "aftermarket" alarm system. If it was your bluetooth system, explain to them what it is and make them fix your alarm.

Just my 2 cents!

Dealers are always quick to try and point blame somewhere else.

Thanks Chayos, I think I will do just that. Its just that sometimes my time is very limited to go and deal with these things.

I guess I should have stated that this is an 06 Limited to help narrow the location down and I do not have any warranty on the vehicle so it will be totally on my dime with whatever is wrong.

I was hoping that I could have torn down the dash a little more today but the wife had other plans so there went that. But today I was unable to lock my 4runner at all. Everytime I did, after about 45 seconds, it started sounding. I did take special note and it would sound actually 10 quick honks then there would be a pause of about 4 seconds and then it would do another 10 quick honks. It would then reset but then in about 45 seconds more, it would go through the same thing. I can't even lock the doors manually with the key trying to bypass the alarm system as it actively engages when I do.

I am getting very aggravated with it today.

Call me an idiot, but is there some fuse that can be pulled? I haven't looked around for one yet.

I don't know if it would work or not, but maybe leaving the battery disconnected overnight to try and reset the alarm system?

Sounds like the tech at the dealership doesn't know what the f he is talking about

If it is an aftermarket alarm system. It sounds like your door trigger wire is not making good contact. Also could be a bad ground to the alarm system. There should be a fuse under the dash for this system somewhere. Next time you have it apart start at the ignition switch and follow the OEM wiring harness back from there. Most people splice the power and ignition to that harness.

Well, I just bit the bullet and said screw it. I did not have time to deal with the dealership so I ended up having a local audio dealer just install a whole new system with a remote start. I ended up getting the Autopage C3 unit and so far, I like it.
