I dont want to step on toes, but that statement of an fj being the t4r's little brother is quite inacurrate....here's why...
Landcruisers have been around since 1951. T4r's have been around since 1984...and i know this section is probably based on the newer fj cruiser, but, the first "fj" has been around significantly longer, not too mention came in waaaay bigger and beefier styles than the t4r's (fj-60, fj-62, fj-55, etc.). Also, out of pure age, the "fj" would be the t4r's big brother...just a thought.

Marketing probably called it little brother cause it's overall length and wheelbase is shorter, even though it has better specs for off-roading.

i agree! and then some. the FJ series has always been a superior off-road vehicle than most, including the Hummer's and Heeps. not to mention very historical. For example, it was the first vehicle to go up the 6th stage of the Fuji Mountains, making it the first vehicle to ever reach an altitude that high. but in wheel base and such has come in a variety of lengths depending on what model you have. I believe the FJ-55 had the longest wheel base, or the FJ-60/62. I love my T4R but I'm an FJ lover at heart. They've been in my life since the day i was born. I have what is called C.O.A.D.(Cruiser Obsession and Addiction Disorder)

I think the little brother is more of a tip of the hat than a declaration of lineage. Fact is on the 120 platform the FJ Cruiser is the new kid on the block.

Either way, as the owner of 3 LandCruisers I agree....more grandfather than big brother.

The toyota club I offroad with has a good 10 FJ's that offroad regularly. Among them, 3 have had broken e-lockers and broken rear diff. Hardly the image of the days of old come to mind.

Had it been built on a the frame of a 70 series, and had a deisel option; we we would be in business now. Where the 40 series ended in the early 80's the 70 series was born. Having used that frame and mechanics would have made it true of keeping the lineage on-going.

I do like the FJ Cruiser, and I often think of selling my 4th Gen and getting an FJ, and all my best offroad buddies have one, but it's not of the same lineage as the classic FJ's of old. That line was broken, and the FJ Cruiser is reborn out of 4Runner DNA.

I'd have to agree with this post. The FJ is NOT the FJ Landcruiser of old. It's a newer product. Being the buffed little (meaning younger) brother isn't a bad thing anyway.

The Lexus GX470/460 is a true Land Cruiser, outside the US (North America) it's called a Land Cruiser Prado.

FJ40 are really Jeeps/Willy's, and it's real designation is J40, the F is for the Engine type, thus FJ40.

Fortuner is VERY INTERESTING! Wow, didn't know it existed. Looks like a "mini-sequoia". Also, looks a tad smaller than the 4th gen. I really like it!!

Agree. Though neither is sold as a Landcruiser, the V8 4th gen 4runner and GX probably has more in common with the 100 series Lancruisers than the FJ does. Not trying to stir things up but I get this all the time from some friends here as well lol.. Just because it's called the FJ Cruiser doesn't mean it's related. Both the FJ and 4runner are based on the 120 platform.. And eventhough the GX is considered a Landcruiser by others if I'm not mistaken it's also based on the 120 platform as well.. I could be mistaken though..

1. The 4Runner, Hilux Surf, LC Prado, FJC, & Lexus GX share the same platform which is not a true Land Cruiser platform.

2. The name Hilux Surf is only used for the JDM 4Runners. Outside of Japan, the Hilux Surf is known as the 4Runner.

3. The Fortuner is based on the Hilux platform, not the Hilux Surf platform. The Hilux platform is the 1-ton compact pickup truck related to the Tacoma.
Also, the fortuner is made in Thailand, not Japan.

4. The GX460/470 are not true Land Cruisers. These are based on the LC Prado

Old thread i know and i agree it may not be a true LC but That fly's in the face of Toyota marketing and brochures and also Akio Toyoda's comments to the contrary. In fact the most recent marketing states it's the heir to the landcruiser legacy. That brings us to who says it's a LC us or toyota?
