Little Help with Tire Selection

Background information first. I have a '99 Highlander, and my 3" OME lift should be here by the end of next week, and I'm getting 33's after the install. I work for my dad's construction company, and almost half of my driving is for the company. So, my dad saw some Multi Mile Wild Country MTX's at the place we usually get tires and thought they looked like the kind of tire I wanted, so is willing to buy four of them at $218 a piece. I've done some research and know they are a private manufacturer, made by Cooper. My question is, has anyone ran these tires, and if so, likes/dislikes? Would they be worth getting if they don't cost me anything? Or should I go ahead and just pay the difference to upgrade to something like the BFG AT's or the Nitto TG's?

Just thought I should add, I have to pay for the spare either way, since it is my choice and not worn tires causing me to need new one's (33's). So I will be out a little bit of money either way.
 
I haven't run them but do like my BFG ATs. If they are not costing you anything, it is worth a try if they are the load range and ply rating you need/want. If you are not satisfied the tire shop my change them out for something else if you have a relationship with them. You may have to pay the difference. But again, free-to-you tires? Probably worth a try.

$218 each!? you can find BFGs or the Nittos for that price easily that is just a rip off, you are buying a knock off brand and paying brand name prices. got to america tire and see what they will offer you or check out tirerack.com
 
If I could get those for free I'd take them in a heartbeat. They are made by Cooper which a ton of tires we buy are anyway.
 
I had BFG ATs and they were nice. I have heard of people not needing spacers to run the 285/75-16 on stock wheels.

FYI on 285/75-16 (33"). They usually rub on the upper control arms, inside of the tire. You will also get rubbing at the back of the front wheel well, at the pinch weld. They will also rub when fully stuffed, in front, unless you have a body lift. You will also loose power, mpg and braking.

Please, I hope you have researched before jumping into 33s. I'm running 32s (Yokohama AT/S 265/75-16) and have a little rubbing (3.5" lift in front and 4.5" in back, no BL) and wheel some hard trails. I think running 32s has helped the stress on my CVs (breakage when wheeling, less stress and a little less traction)

If you plan on putting the spare under the back, a 33 can be difficult to fit. I have heard that it can be done with a used tire and letting some air out.

Save some money and just buy a used spare.

I just threw on my Toytec 3" OME lift and a set of Nitto TG 285/75/R16's. Love the set up and the stiff feel of the suspension (just came off a worn out set of stockers).

But tires arent cheap, and if someone was offering up a set i would be all over that like a fly on a stinky pile.

"The Kid" is totally right, you should be able to pick up a set of name brand tires for that price.

Discount the Nitto TG's for 206 ea. that is where i picked mine up.....

Thanks for all the replies, everybody has been most helpful. As for pricing, I had looked around a little bit, but I'll admit I was a little lazy when doing so. I have now found several places online where I can get BFG's, Nitto's, or even Toyo's for the same price or cheaper than the retail price for the Multi-Miles the shop quoted.
Concerning rubbing, I am aware of the problems that a 285 can present on my rig, and have plans to hammer the pinch weld and whatever else needs done to minimize this. I am researching doing a BL as well, to help with this fact.
The spare will not be carried underneath, it will reside on my rack for a short time until I get a rear bumper and swing away tire carrier built.
Also coming shortly is the 199mm Tundra brake upgrade, and hopefully regearing in the not too distant future.

Gerdo, you really have rubbing with that much lift!? Seems I have seen on here plenty of 3rd gens with just a 3" lift that have minimal rubbing with 285's, anyone correct me if I'm wrong.
 
I think the biggest issue people have with rubbing and 285's, is they upgrade to a different wheel. I will admit though, I had some minor rubbing on my rear bumper and front fender well, but fixed that by trimming the lower plastic bumper valance, and then running LC 8 wraps in the back.

The UCA's have NEVER been an issue for me, as I upgraded to a wheel which pushed out my tires past the body.....the one thing you have to consider however, is by getting wheels that push out your rubber that far.....causes alot more road debris to get kicked up onto the rocker panels, and doors.

All in all, I'm happy I went with the 285's, but I don't wheel like Gerdo does, so Function is not as big of a priority for me. The small amount of trail riding I do, is nothing compared to the hard core trails some of the other guys do around here.....

It sounds like you have researched and thought it out, that's a good thing.

I have more rubbing since I added the wheel spacers since they move the outside edge further out while turning. Before and after I have zero rubbing in back. Before spacers I had the same rubbing in front at full stuff, the top of the inner fender well (my suspension will flex completely to the bumpstops). The other rubbing is minor and only when really flexing.
 
yeah tell your dad that you can save him some $$$ and get better tires for your rig, if you go some where else... im prety sure he will go for it if he is any kinda money smart(hope he is owning or running a business). i am running 285s at stock height and have only minimal rub, but yes you are right, the amount of rub you have greatly depends on the wheel and offset as well as if spacers are used or not. but if you dont mind the rub(i dont) run the 285. sure you lose a little mileage but its not that bad, and power loss is hardly noticeable(and im running a heavy E rated tire)
 
Ok, let me clarify a couple of things for evryone's benefit. I have the 16" 5 stars, and don't plan on changing anytime soon. My build plans are to have an extremely capable overland rig that can handle moderate or even severe trails, but I don't the desire or opportunity for serious crawling. Im building custom plate front and rear bumpers, and probably trimming my flares a bit. So is the only thing I need to worry about is the pinch weld and the top of the fender well if I go with 285's?
 
i think you can rock the 285s with minimal rubbing personally and that that rubbing can be over come with a 1" body lift if you dont like it
 
pretty much those are the only areas you should have to worry about, as well as possible UCA rub. I think if you go with 1/4 inch spacers instead of the more common 1.25 you should fix the UCA rub issue without creating additional rub issues. If you are not looking for hardcore trails(of course every defines hardcore differently) then I might suggest sticking with 265/75/16(32"). I wheel everything from fireroad to rocks and need the 285/75/16(33") and have watched people hang their diffs with the shorter tire on some of the rock trails. Otherwise they(265/75's) are just fine for most easy to moderately difficult trails and better for daily driving. Another option for you since you want expo build would be 255/85/16's(33") but there are only 1-2 AT treads in that size the rest are MT.
