mine was probably broken by a detailer, because when I tried to clean around it it broke right away. I paid $9 at the dealer for a replacement.

My mistake. It does need to be silver. For some reason I was thinking that portion of my 4runner was black. My guess is that they are all silver?

The slot it is supposed to cover is to allow you to shift the trans out of park into neutral in case you have to push or tow the vehicle because you can't start it. You insert a key or a screwdriver into the slot to disengage the shift lock. Normally, you can't shift the trans out of park unless the vehicle is running, and you depress the brake pedal. The cover is only for cosmetic purposes, and it will not effect how the vehicle works if it isn't in place.

I've had to replace this on both the used 4th gen's I've owned, they are a couple of bucks from the dealer. They are a little tricky to install correctly, I usually use a small screwdriver to push the tab in a little bit to get it to snap into place. Properly placed, it shouldn't come out on it's own. I think a lot of people break the little tab installing or taking it off, then it gets lost.

Thanks for posting that. Went ahead and bought 2 for when i break the 1st one installing it!

Can this button stay in the override position or need to be reset? My 16' will shift out of park without a key in ignition or pressing the brake pedal.
