Loading 4x8 plywood on roof?

Anyone in here modify or make their own roof rack to carry 2-3 sheets of plywood regularly on top of their 4Runner? And I don't mean just bungy cording plywood on to the rack bars (not too safe).
Looking for a convenient, safe carrying solution to support frequent carpentry/custom work.
Of course, pics would be awesome - thanks!

I know yakima makes canoe holders that are pretty much little L shaped brackets that will go on your roof rack. 4 of those should atleast hold them on there pretty tight but I dont know about the measurements.

The safest, IMHO, option would be to get a utility trailer with at least a 4'x8' bed to carry these types of loads. It is easier to load/unload the material, and you don't have to worry about the load going air born if the tie down straps break. I picked up one of those SnowBear trailers from Home Depot some years ago, the best $600.00 I ever spent.

^^ Yeah, I hear you on the trailer. For the next while I just won't have the room to put a trailer anywhere, and I'd like to try first squeezing as much utility out of the 4Runner as possible as is, with some kind of rack.

I already have a feeling I will be making my own rack (dad has a welder!). If so, I will post pics then.

I think it's totally doable with Yakima control towers, 58" round bars (cut to the length you need), and (as someone else mentioned) the canoe brackets called "load stops". Find themHERE. If your talking just a few sheets you be just fine. If your talking about 6+ of melamine or mdf then your getting a bit too heavy I think. Factory crossbars are too wimpy.

i know in my 95 4runner 4x8 sheets of plywood fit in the back with the rear seat down. i think i had to leave the gate open. i havent tried with my 04. i bought a trailer. but they might fit.
