You need to read up on "lunchbox lockers" and decide if that's right for you. We can't tell you that. If the 3rd member is a different ratio than yours now, it will still work (you don't have to worry about matching the front like you would with a 4x4), but a different ratio will affect your power and mpgs for the better or worse depending on the ratio.

Also, putting in a whole new 3rd member just to get a lockright isn't a great idea IMO. Not trying to be rude, but you would be making more work out of it than it needs to be. Think about this.. You don't know anything about this new 3rd... How are the bearings? Are the gears in good shape? Why did the guy take it off his 4runner in the first place before he sold it? Was it damaged? Lockrights cost about $2-250 new and don't require a gear set-up so they can be installed in your driveway in about an hour or less.

Yea I aske him why he took it out. He said because he sold his 4runner and kept it for a project down the road but never got it going. he put about 8000 miles on it and very minimul off road time. And I asked if I could buy just the locker from him and he said that he would just go ahead and give the 3rd with it an he said both for 150$. And the gears were 4.11

If you drive in the snow I'd recomend against it, I have a Richmond locker in my 2wd Tacoma and it Demands alot of respect in the winter, it'll turn you in a heart beat. I can't say how it is off road my Taco is a street monster.

That's a pretty good deal regardless. The labor is pretty much the same whether you swap the whole 3rd or just the Lockright, I was just making sure you knew the condition of the 3rd before you threw it in. It sounds weird to me because, how did he sell the 4runner without a rear diff? Was it a wreck?

yeah thats an ok deal pretty good, the guy could of gone to a wrecking yard and pulled another 3rd to swap with... if i was trying to sell a 4runner that had a lunchbox type locker i think id swap it out for a regular open diff, opens your potential market back up to more buyers

Yea I kno that's why I'm really interested I'm all for finding a good deal.and I live in ga so the winters aren't bad at all. Snow is very light.

That makes sense.
