Hi Folks
I need a little help. Every once in a while when starting the vehicle, the gear shift lever will lock in park. Any ideas.

Going on what he said, the brake switch could be faulty. VW had a recall on those a few years back as well. Same thing would happen.

pedal firmness has nothing to do with the electronic brake switch, so its still an option. Also make sure you are firmly using the parking brake before you take your foot off the regular brakes so as to not "hang" the car on the tranny (which can cause the gear selector to not want to exit park.

Brake switch has nothing to do with pedal feel. It tells the brake lights and shifter lockout when the pedal is depressed.

IIRC you must have the brakes applied for the shifter to move.

It is a safety feature that all late model vehicles with automatic transmissions have. After starting the vehicle, you must step on your brake pedal which then allows you to move the shift lever out of PARK. This is for safety, so the vehicle dose not move accidentally when shifted out of PARK.
FYI, there is a little square cover near your shifter on your console. In an emergency you can pop that cover off and press the button underneath to unlock the shifter.
