Locking differentials and hood scoops

I would just like to say hi to everyone! I just got myself a 2000 4Runner SR5 5-speed and stumbled across this board and have found it a great source of information so far.

First question: what's the deal with the locking differentials? What 4Runners have them? Did they come on sticks or just automatics?

Second question: can you make the hoodscoop functional? has anybody done this or is there not enough room?

I've done a search on both questions, but haven't really found a concrete answer for the first, and the second comes up with nothing. Thanks for any help. pics to come soon a suppose...

okay, locking differentials lock the axle so both wheels will spin at the same speed, no matter where they are in relation to each other. i believe they came on both, it was an option from the factory (the rear e-locker) as far as making the hood scoop functional....

its a lot of time and planning and not so cheap to make the scoop functional for very very little gain.
 
yeah, very very if ANY gain, but hey, if you want to spend alot of money putting tubing under your hood, atleast put the outlet tube infront of the filter, not on top of it.... but its not my truck....
 
E-lockers were available '96-'00 Runners with either the stick or auto.

On the scoop,you'd be better just leaving alone since the looks give more performance gain than messing with it. The looks you get from the scoopless is worth it alone. ;)
 
Any easy way to tell you have the diff option, besides doing burnouts? Haven't had a chance to do any real off roading with it and I bought it used, not sure if it's in there.

VIN maybe?
 
there will be a switch/button that should say something like rr diff lock or something along those lines, to the left of your steering wheel. there might be easier ways, but i would just look....
 
The button is labeled RR DIFF LOCK in orange lettering just to the left of the steering column,can't miss it.
The diff lock also can only be engaged while in 4Lo but there is a nice easy mod so you can engage it in any mode,even 2wd.

ok, so yeah, that guy did what I think is a horrible, hokey job. What I was thinking was something more along the lines of what is done on the 4th Gen Camaro SS where it has a functional cowl induction via an air filter right above the intake manifold that connects with the hood when closed. I just wonder if there is enough clearance to do that w/the supercharger (planned in the near future) . . . maybe an aftermarket hood is needed with more clearance? I'm sure that this can be done with a clean setup. But then does warmer air from above the engine come into play?

With the restricted air flow into the air box, he is actualy doing more harm then good. He could have made a simple deflector in the scoop to blow the incoming air on his S/C'er and ditch the hokie looking fan pointing at it.
 
The SC can be installed using any 4Runner hood and the scoop has nothing to do with that;it's for looks only,you know,factory rice. :p

Yeah i'm laughing my ass off right now....
I mean come on, pointing a fan at the s/c'er? I'll bet he checks his tire pressure, every day too... no offense or anything, but ignorance will make you buy anything

I know the guys intentions were good, but but the air flow through 4 1" tubes is not enough, ecspecialy if your boosting, it gonna suck a lot of air.

yeah he does have the right intentions. but for some reason, I can remember in my physics class something about airflow. Air flows more through 1-3" opening than through 3-1" openings, or something like that. but that property does not retain to water.

If he made a duct that carried that air, like a 2'X6" tube, it would work.
