Locking Gas Cap in the US?

Anyone in the US running their 5th Gen with a locking gas cap? If so, does it seem to be running normally? I know they sell them in Canada. I spoke with a dealer up there who said they would ship one down if I couldn't find one in the States.

I would really like to have one on my ride, but after speaking with a Toyota parts guy, I am a little nervous to go for it. He said the reason they don't have those caps available in the US is due to emissions standards. Supposedly, the fuel system is either pressurized or evacuated and the cap has some sort of ventilation integrated into it. The lock would interfere with the vent, so they don't offer it here. He wouldn't say if the fuel system was different between the US & Canadian 4Runner models beside that one feature.

He wasn't clear if it would harm the engine, but he did suggest that it would not pass emissions with the locking cap installed. If it is just for emissions and does not adversely affect the engine, then I would go for it in an instant. I could always just swap the cap when I go in for emissions.

Not sure you really need a locking gas cap. I read somewhere that most cars built today have something in the neck of the tank to keep gas from being siphoned out.

I used the Stant #11591 for about 3 days and my check engine light came on so i went back to the stock gas cap for now my dealer doesn't even sell them.

-i've been running mine with a toyota brand locking fuel cap which was made for the 2010 4runner since day one (got the dealer to throw it in), and i have had no issues what so ever.

-i've taken my car not only on road but off road as well with no problems using the locking fuel cap

While there is an anti-siphon system in the fuel tank i dont think thats the issue at hand. stealing a few litres/gallons of gas isnt that bad. i think the main concern is people putting in foreign contaminents that could mess up the ride (sugar, water diesel, you name it).


the locking fuel cap provides peace of mind more than anything else and i think thats why people buy them. thats certainly why i did.


hopefully someone will be able to chime in with a definite answer

In 2000, the US EPA began requiring "onboard refueling vapor recovery" systems in all vehicles sold domestically. The gas cap is a part of that system, and an aftermarket cap might not meet the standards of a OEM cap and trigger the sensor. This would explain a Toyota locking cap working while a non-Toyota cap doesn't.

To my knowledge, Canada isn't quite so anal about evaporative emissions or vapor recovery and doesn't require the same gas caps.

I just had the check gas cap light come on my old SUV that is being traded in for my new 4runner. I couldnt get it to go away so I went to Auto Zone and the only thing they had for the size I needed was a locking gas cap replacement. I put it on and haven't had the light come back yet. There are about 10 or so different size gas caps out there supposedly(autozone clerk) so you have to make sure you get the right one or you will still get the check gas cap or check engine light....

That is the PN I was given by the dealership in Canada. Jca21, does your fuel cap have a vent in it? I can see mine at the bottom of the stem of the cap.

I would like the cap not only to prevent siphoning (which may or may not be an issue), but also to prevent contaminants from entering the tank.

I picked up a Stant 10504 based on other owner feedback in here and it's been working now for 2 weeks without any issues at all. :cheers:
