Locking gas cap???

I agree, That was the reason for starting this thread. I've called 14 Toyota dealers in the surrounding states and got the same answer. Toyota does not make or have a locking cap for the 2010 4 Runner. Again, if anyone has a phone # of a dealer or autoparts store that claims to have one, I'd sure like to have it.

i just posted pictures of a locking toyota gas cap for the 2010 4runner. what more could you ask for?

it just means that there's no US spec locking fuel cap and i would find it hard to believe that the Canadian fuel cap wont work on the US 4runner.


if emissions checks are the main concern hold onto your old cap and just throw it on when u go get your checks done.

locking gas cap WILL cause the check engine light to come on. I had it on my corolla a few years back, ended up screwing up some major computer component near bottom of gas tank ( a large black box of some sort - dont remember).

dont lose the key to the gas cap. otherwise sol while running on empty

i've been driving with the gas cap for over 3 months now. no check engine light so i guess i must be one of the lucky ones :moon:

dont know if the 4runner has this black box in rear near fuel tank under axle. maybe someone can check into that. if that fails, and you have a locking gas cap, they wont cover under warrantly.

I just picked up this exact "Emission Control Type" gas cap from my local NAPA auto parts (e.g. part #703-1641). I did not post pics as it is exactly the one shown above. Cost me $14.50. No warning light at all so far.

That actually looks just like the Stant one that was mentioned earlier on the thread, which I picked up. No warning lights for me either.

Any updates to this? Can any one confirm that the Stant#10504 or napa 703-1641 does not cause check engine light?

The black canister captures the fuel vapors to be burned when the engine is running, rather than venting them to the atmosphere.

The reason it broke is because you or the full service station kid put gas in past the first "click" from the gas pump, which will cause liquid fuel to overflow into there. It takes a couple of times, but do it often enough, it'll mess something up on any modern vehicle.

Lesson 1: Don't top up your tank past the first click.

Someone was told by a Toyota parts guy this fairy tale about emissions being different. Moosecookies. For one, they're not Toyota spokespeople. Two, both Nissan and Toyota vehicles sold in Canada qualify for 50 state emissions certification in the USA if the vehicle is sold in both markets. You can call Nissan Canada or Toyota Canada and they'll fax you the letter you'd need to convince the friendly US Customs people to fill out the rest of your importation paperwork.

Lesson 2: People who work at Toyota stealerships are no smarter about the products they sell than the general population, and will make things up rather than say "I don't know."

And sure a crazy person might key your car or break a window if they can't get into your fuel tank, but at least you won't need a new engine. I'd rather have cosmetic damage than a dead engine.

You guys lock away...down here the scum will just drive a punch through the tank and slide the can or pan under it. Nobody sees them that way. Converters are a much hotter (pun intended) item with thieves. Really though very few thieves steal these items anymore when there is all kinds of copper just waiting to be stolen. I learned a long time ago its better to pay the cost of the stolen item instead of pay the cost of a stolem item + the damage they did getting it. Case in point: My wife drives a new CR-V. She parked, in broad daylight in a nice parking lot with all kinds of people around. She was going to walk at a park. She put her purse UNDER the privacy tray in the rear hatch. I know 'cause I watched her. We did one lap and she wanted to get something out of her purse. Side qtr window smashed, purse stolen. We have lifelock so no worries on cards. Big thing was her glasses. Damage: $250.00 for purse, $600.00 for glass and install. Lesson? Don't think any vehicle with factory alarm will ever protect anything, or that locked doors deter anyone.

Went to Pep Boys and asked parts guy to pull locking gas cap for 2011 4Runner; none showed. Asked him to pull 2010 model and it shows Stant 11504 (not 10504).

I'm thinking 11504 is the newer model or more specific model for 4Runner. Price is $14.99.

Been using it for 5 days, so far so good. No check engine lights or anything weird.

I've also been very dissatisfied that Toyota does not offer a locking cap and does not support the use of the Stant 10504. BTW - There are two stant numbers - the 10504 is packaged in a box.... the 11504 is the same cap but in a blister pack. I got this info directly from Stant.

I've used two different (new) caps from Stant. I'm posting my experience. Notice that the second cap, which Stant sent me as a free replacement on the possibility that the first one was defective, has been on my 4Runner for more than a year. This morning, when I started the vehilce, the CEL light came on and I immediately went to the dealer. Same results.... had to take the locking cap off again. My experience....

- Jan 8,2010 - Purchased 4Runner
- Jan 15, 2010 - Installed Stant #10504
- April 10, 2010 – Check engine light (codes P0441 and P0455. Was advised by Toyota service department this was caused by the locking gas cap. Installed original OEM cap.
- April - Contacted Stant and provided them with the details of this incident. They sent me a new cap – same part number (#10504)
- May 2010 – Installed new locking cap.
- June 2, 2011 – Check engine light (codes P0441 and P0455). Was advised by Toyota service department this was caused by the locking gas cap. Installed original OEM cap.

My question..... when is Toyota going to respond to this issue?

I'm also of the opinion that I'd rather someone siphon gas out of the neck than jab a screwdriver in the bottom of the tank. Hopefully if they have to siphon they swallow some of it and kill themselves. I think it becomes a matter of risk management. Do you leave your doors unlocked so the F'rs won't break windows? Or do you lock it up and hope that deters them? And then, will they break a $280 window to steal $12 worth of parking change. Life is full of questions.

I've been using the Stant 10504 on my 4runner for almost 9 months now without any lights at all. I don't top off my tank, I always stop at the first "click" the pump kicks it off at and never had an issue.

They even left the gas cap off when finished one time, perhaps interrupted in the act. I suppose the recent gas prices are raising interest in that lost art.. So that Stant cap is on the way to me now.

I'd rather pay for a new tank of fuel than use a locking fuel cap and have someone puncture a fuel line or the tank instead. If they plan on stealing your fuel, they will get your fuel one way or another.
