How many people have or know someone who got their gas siphoned out? I've heard about it before but don't actually know anyone it's happened to.

I have never known anyone who has had fuel stolen. I have known a few people who have had sugar poured in the tank.

I don't know anyone. I'm more concerned about having my catalytic converter cut out (which happened to my buddy's suburban). That costs more to replace!
Root cause found: Don't date crazy people.
Plus, even the sugar thing, if they find you have a locking gascap, they'll vandalize your car some other way.

I know someone who had their gas siphoned while they were at work. Think about it, if you were a gas siphoner, wouldn't you take note of which vehicles have easy access gas caps and large fuel tanks? I would prefer not to have a marked car.
And I don't think you could use a screwdriver to open a locking gas cap, maybe a fuel door.
And sure a crazy person might key your car or break a window if they can't get into your fuel tank, but at least you won't need a new engine. I'd rather have cosmetic damage than a dead engine.
By the way, I emailed Toyota about this back in Feb. They responded a week or two ago with a bull**** form letter, no answer.

I thought cars today have a stop in them to keep gas from being siphoned? This question came up before.

As part of my "doomer kit", I practiced with a shaker siphon and a couple of junkers in the local pull-your-part yard... every time I was able to punch through the obstruction with a dead blow hammer and a couple of goosenecks threaded together:

I agree, I've NEVER heard of anyone having gas stolen from their cars. Now stolen from boats, sure, happens all the time (and they don't have locks either)
I've known about 6 people who have had their cat. converter cut out, that has been in the last few years, now that is where I would want a lock or a nice high output shock device

The 5th Gen Runners have dual cats attached directly to the exhaust manifolds on the engine.One on each side.You have to have access under the hood to get at the top bolts.
Harry Houdini himself, in his prime ,couldn't have cut them off.
If you own a 5th ,crawl up under there and check out your twin cats location.That's what a cat burglar would do and then he would move on to the next easier target!
Some cars,mostly older designs, have them inline with exhaust pipes up underneath and are what the thieves are looking for with their battery operated high speed or sawzall.
Pretty sure siphoning gas is a lost art. They can go straight to the plastic gas tank with a hand drill or sharp punch.At least that's what some idiots were doing at the malls around here.

Toyota says locking gas caps are a problem
Called Toyota, The parts guy said they stopped selling locking gas caps because of a warning light problem with the turn one click feature. I do worry about contamination more than theft. Guess I'll try to find a way to lock the gas tank door.

Ok, I have to ask....where do you live??? Is it really that bad of a neighborhood you have to worry about your gas being stolen??? Do you have that many people upset at you that you are worried about stuff being dumped into your tank??? I have lived in 2 major cities and neither of these ever crossed my mind to be concerned about. I am curious.

I don't know if dealer has a genuine Toyota cap, but Stant should have one available for the 4Runner.
When the '05 Tacoma came out, it was on special order and took about three weeks for me to get mine. I never had any check engine lights in the 4.5 years on my Tacoma with the Stant locking cap.

I just got mine a couple of days ago... It was a Stant locking gas cap and not Toyota OEM. And so far no problems.

thats bullshit.
i've had my locking toyota fuel cap since day one (i bought mine back in january).
been using it everyday since and have had NO warning lights turn on.
