Stant Non Threaded Locking Gas Cap

FJ Cruiser fuel door lock. Will this fit on the 4runner ?? or perhaps ask the manufacturer to make one for the 4runner ?

I was concerned about this on my new 2016, so I ordered one from Amazon.

Locks fine, but on two occasions it caused a CEL to pop on, so apparently the one I bought doesn't seal correctly. Bummer.

I wonder if the one linked above is any better....

You know what would really suck? If you were a vandal or fuel thief and you grabbed a gas cap that had a carefully crafted dummy gas cap on top of the real gas cap that had razor blades carefully embedded in it. Yeah, that would really suck.

Before any wannabe Nancy Grace's go off the deep end, I'm just saying that would suck. ;-) Hypothetically.

No locking gas cap

Just purchased a 2016 4Runner. Very disappointed that there is not an interior lever to open the gas cap on the vehicle. I've never purchased a brand new vehicle before, yet every other vehicle I've owned has had at least a locking cap gas.

A few weeks ago someone siphoned gas from my 5th gen while it was sitting at Las Vegas airport. They only got less than an 1/8th of a tank. It made me think about getting a locking cap but I would rather have the gas thieves take an 1/8th tank easily instead of cutting the filler neck and/or poking a hole in the tank. I haven't had to deal with anybody stealing gas in over 12 years so it was kind of a wake up call. I wish I could of caught them. I would have made them wear that gas. :flamethrwoer2::flame:

Strange world we live in, I wish people felt there was a better way to get 10-15$ worth of stuff

Hi everyone!

I'm new to the forums. I plan on purchasing a new T4R.

In my research about this issue of the 4Runner's non-locking fuel doors and caps, I came across this post in the Tacoma forums ... about modding the pickup's fuel door to be lockable and adding a button on the inside console to open it up. The OP even posted a video of the end result.

Has anyone did this mod on their 4Runner? If so, what steps did you take and how easy was it?

Thanks.
Mike

Hi everyone!
.....
Thanks.
Mike

The problem is this:

Do you want some crack head taking a screwdriver to your "locking" gas door and causing $800 worth of damage or be more proactive?

See my "hypothetical" alternative above.

Had a buddy whose truck got broken into multiple times to steal the stereo and "hypothetically" took a 1x4, cut slots in it and "hypothetically" glued straight razors in it and placed it under the dash where one would have to reach up into in order to remove the stereo.

A few weeks later his door was open, there was a shitload of blood and his truck never got broken into again at that apartment complex. Hypothetically.

;-)

If I did that, sooner or later I'd forget and stick my hand up under there for something. Or forget to remove it before dropping it off at the shop, and end up getting sued.

Has anyone got a suitable gas locking cap/flap they'd recommend for the 2016 ?

Would be nice to have that when I leave it at unattended garages etc on long trips -

I bought a 2012 4Runner last year and was mildly concerned about the lack of a locking gas cap or cover. I was reassured that "no one siphons gas today" or "thinks about putting a foreign substance in a gas tank." Tonight I visited our local gym and parked with about 20 other vehicles under lights and in plain view of a security cameras. After spending about an hour in the gym, I returned to find the fuel door open and gas cap dangling. While it appears no gas was siphoned, I have no idea if they put something in the tank, which is a plausible concern for a $40,000+ investment. The only other car in the parking lot with the same issue was a newer model Ford pick-up, also with no locking fuel door or gas cap. Any car with a locking fuel door or gas cap was untouched.

Here's some additional data on the subject. Listed below is my history of car ownership, whether it had a secured or unsecured gas cap\door, and stolen gas or compromised gas caps\doors:

No locking gas cap or door and number of times the gas cap or door was removed and\or gas stolen:
'66 Dodge Coronet - 2
'67 Cadillac Cp Deville - 1
'88 Mitsubishi Mighty Max - 2
'12 Toyota 4Runner - 1

Locking gas cap or door and number of times the gas cap or door was removed and\or gas stolen:
'76 Honda Accord - 0
'80 Honda Accord - 0
'80 Toyota Celica - 0
'96 Honda Accord - 0
'99 Honda Accord - 0
'00 Toyota Celica - 0
'01 Hyundai Santa Fe - 0
'02 Toyota 4Runner - 0
'05 Honda Odyssey - 0

Feel free to make the call, but in my experience the evidence seems to speak for itself. While some may consider it minor, the peace of mind for some owners and the sufficient deterrent for most criminals appears to warrant keeping a lockable fuel door. At a minimum, it would be nice for Toyota to offer an OEM option for a locking fuel cap. For now, I'll be looking into aftermarket options.
So was anything put in?

Returned from a roadtrip Sunday, and topped off my 2015 4Runner at the Shell station next to my apartment. Reset my trip meter and Drove .2 mile to my place and parked it, ready for a work week with a full tank of gas.
Monday morning at 6am, I leave for work, and think it's odd my gas gauge only went up to 3/4 tank. "Cold weather, maybe?" I thought, as I tapped my gauge bezel and even pumped my brakes to in case the float sensor was "hung up", maybe it would "free it up" so to speak.
I left my station in my 4Runner to pick my dogs up at the vet, and glanced down to notice I was STILL at 3/4 tank, and now at 16.+miles on the trip meter. Gauge was working just fine...I was EXACTLY 5 GALLONS shy of a full tank...which, ironically, is the size of many fuel cans.
I'll be getting a locking gas cap, at least until I clean out my damn garage so I can park inside.

I hear ya bruddah!

It does suck not having some sort of deterrent to prevent people from screwing around and putting something inside your gas tank, especially with all those crazies out there.

Does anyone know if the Stant 10504 is compatible on a 2019 4Runner TRD OffRoad?

How's everyone's long term experience been with CEL and the Stant 10504 locking gas cap?

I have the Stant 10504 Locking Fuel Cap on my '16 Limited. It works perfectly. The only minor issue is that it is too wide for the plastic leash that was on the old cap, but it fits in the cap-holder on the inside of the gas door.

Build the Wall

Concerned about liberal adding foreign material to my gasoline, because I believe in enforcement of our existing immigration laws. :bravo:

puzzles me why they wouldn't have the locking door..maybe the bean counters thought it added too much to the overall cost..do the highlanders have them??Not something I'd really worry about in my 4R, but I've got a locking cap on my offroad rig, Bronco with a 32 gallon tank..put that in back when gas went to over $4 a gallon and there was supposedly a rash of gas thefts..if someone wants it bad enough they can easily punch a hole in your tank...
