Locking rear end

Wrong.

My '97 SR5, 5-speed, V6, E-locker, 4x4 came with 4.10's. I bought it new, and I have the monroney sticker stating the gear ratio. I've also checked the actual gearing in the axles, because people had been incorrectly saying that E-locker's are only 4.30 ratio, which is not true.

There was also a 4.56 E-locker ratio.

I bought a E-Locker rearend from a Tacoma with 4:10's. I checked before installing they were OE gears so the diff wasn't regeared as far as I know.

Tacoma was different as their lockers were 4.10's, i am like 95% sure that all 4runner lockers were 4.30's only.

There are 4.10 and 4.56 lockers from 4runners. MTDEW has a 4.10 locker and I don't think it was from a taco. Plus someone recently posted the part numbers for the three different geared locker combos.

Yeah, there are some weird combos out there. Bottom line is you need to do the spin test to actually count the gearing.

This seems to come up alot, and people always want to argue that there are rules, but they aren't 100%, whether it's axle code, wheel size, VIN, or whatever. So people, just do the spin test. It's super easy.

Lockers

By no means is this definitive, but one could infer from the 2000 brochure below that a 4.10:1 locking rear differential was available with the SR5 "Extra Value Package #5," and a 4.30:1 locking rear differential was available with the SR5 "Sport Package plus locking rear differential." It should also be noted that the 4.30:1 seemed to only be available on automatics, so I would think a manual with a locker would be 4.10:1 and an automatic with a locker could be either. YMMV

I am referring to the 4Runner only.

Here is how the gearing seemed to differ between the various the '97 4Runner models that were new on the Dealer lot, when I bought mine new. Keep in mind that in Utah it would've been difficult to find a 4wd 4Runner that didn't come with the electrically locking rear diff. All but a very few I looked at, had the E-locker. I think the E-locker option must have been much more rare in other sales regions.

Anyway, here is how the gearing differed by model in actual 4Runners on the lot.

V6 with auto trans and rear diff locker = 4.30

V6 with manual trans and rear diff locker = 4.10

I4 with rear diff locker = 4.56

All I can confirm is what was in new 4Runners that I saw in '97. And of course what I verified is in my '97 that I still own.
