Locking rear end

So for 650 bucks I am planning on buying a locking rear axle for my 4runner. My question is what do I have to do to adapt it to my runner? The tacomas run rear leaf correct? I hope to pick one up on thursday!

You would have to grind off all mounts off the Tacoma housing and then weld on the proper mounting brackets for the link arms and coils and also shocks. It is a lot of work but then again so is buying a locking 3rd member and then adapting your current housing over to accept the locking diff. $650 is a good deal on a complete rear end though with the locker. I do know that Irbis off road says he has some complete locking rear ends for the 4 Runner for I believe $900 and might end up less then the time and money to convert the other housing to your vehicle.

Good luck with the conversion, that is a massive amount of work to do when there are better options available. Are you getting the correct gear ratio or are you swapping those out too?

I am going to check the ratio before I purchase. what are my options? I wanted to stick with stock toyota but not if means a LOT of work.

ARB locker. As stated above, from what i have read, this conversion requires a lot of work and money.

If you want to stick with stock Toyota parts and minimal work then I would source a 4Runner locked rear end, not a Taco one. Your one the right track with doing a complete swap, thats far easier than doing just the 3rd. There's plenty out there, you just have to find the right price I suppose. Then its a simple matter of doing the electrics.

MORE WIRING NOOOOOO!!! I still haven even got my lights working yet. Im dooomed. So they made a locking rear for the 4runner? I will get one of those instead!

4Runners from 96-00 had a locker as an option. They are found more often in Limited models. There are some good write ups on the toyota forums about doing the locker wiring. So you didn't realize that they are electrically operated? The 'E' in E-Locker means electric.

ok sweet I will make sure to get a 4runner e-locked rearend, Now where do I find the numbers for which gear ratio I have??

Finding the gear ratio of your truck is somewhat difficult as the axle codes aren't much help in the newer trucks. What I can tell you is that all e-locked rear ends have 4.30 gears and your truck does not have 4.30s. Most likely 4.10s but I can't be for sure without knowing what engine and trans you have.

3.4 w/5spd

Also, I believe that the automatic 3rd gens with the rear e-locker had 4.30s whereas the 5spd version with the locker had 4.10s

Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

You're wrong lol.

ALL e-locked trucks had 4.30s.

i also have the 3.4L with 5speed and the 16 inch rims, compared to my old 4runner with 4.10 gears (i was pretty sure) i really thought i had 3.90s, now i'm confused.

i guess the faster speeds are just due to different gearing in the transmission?

My 96 is a Limited with 16's how can I tell if it has the e-locker?
also I have a 94 I am trying to find out what rear it has mabey some1 can help- vin= JT3VN39W0R0139692 (v6 sr5 auto 4wd)

You should have a black switch to the left of the steering wheel.. when locked in a light will come on the right of the dash. You'll need to be in 4 low to engage the locker though.

to the OP even if you find a 4runner rear axle with a locker in it, and you buy the factory switch to activate the locker, you need to make sure you truck came with an ECU that is compatible with the Elocker, on quick way to figure that out is pull you dash(only the drivers side) and in behind the black part around the gauges. before you do, on the left side of the steering wheel is the knob for adjusting your dash lights, and next to it is a cut out w/ block off cap/plate, that is where your locker switch would have been if it was factory(and where you should put it), well behind that in behind the dash will be the plug in for it, if you have the ECU compatible with the Toyota Elocker

here is a wright up on the install/retrofit: http://www.4runners.org/writeups/elocker/

Wrong.

My '97 SR5, 5-speed, V6, E-locker, 4x4 came with 4.10's. I bought it new, and I have the monroney sticker stating the gear ratio. I've also checked the actual gearing in the axles, because people had been incorrectly saying that E-locker's are only 4.30 ratio, which is not true.

There was also a 4.56 E-locker ratio.
