Locking sound at rear gate?

I have a '05 SR and for some reason just noticed that when I close the back gate, there is a sound like something is locking/whirring. Is this normal?

It's an automatic door locker/closer. If the door is left slightly open it will automatically close it.

..so your saying that I'm not closing the rear gate hard enough? hmm..I closed it pretty hard, just to test..still does it.

It will do it whether you close it hard or soft.

No prob. It threw me off the first time I used it. Have fun with the new ride.

No need to slam, just lower the gate until the closer engages and the servo will pull the hatch in tight. You will also hear the motor as it releases the lock when you open the hatch.

From what I've understood it's better that you don't slam it. I'm not in the habit of it, so I've gotten used to it.

+1 Slamming it could actually break the switch on the latch.

It's great when there is so much gear back there that the tailgate won't close without touching it. Instead of trying to use momentum to slam a regular hatch shut and risk breaking something, you just have to push far enough to let it grab and do the rest. That motor is powerful.
