Long Start Problem Please listen to the video

Ok so I have been lurking a while to try to find my problem and have not had any luck. I have a 2000 4runner with the 3400 v6 engine with 67000 miles which I bought from my sister who was the original owner. Since the day she bought it. It has gotten worse lately. In addition I have a lean engine code on both banks. I am thinking I have a fuel delivery problem. The fuel pump was replaced last year.

how old is your battery? Mine did that and the battery looked fine but since it was old it did that exact same thing

Does it do it all the time, or when its warm or cold specifically? I had some warm starting issues and cleaned the IACV and T-body which seemed to help a little.

The sparks are due every thirty thousand, have they ever been changed?
MAF sensor ever cleaned?
Fuel filter ever replaced (I would hope so if the pump was replaced)

My '99 has 104K and has experienced this symptom. My truck would crank over and start as heard in the video. I have it again now.

The remedy for me was cleaning the throttle body and the O2 and MAF sensors. I do 90% stop and go city driving with lots of starts/stops. Think it cost ~ $50-$75 at my local independent shop that specializes in servicing Toyotas.

This service also resolved a rough/oscillating idle.

It is new, about 8 months old.

It is a little worse when it is cold. I have already cleaned the T-Body.

I have not done the plugs yet. I will give that a try, however I remember when it was new it started pretty much the same way. Not sure on the filter.

I did clean the MAF already.

I saw another post where someone said to cycle the fuel pump several times before turning the key all the way to see if the pump had the pressure and that did not work. I need to check the fuel pressure at the fuel rail. Does anyone know what the pressure should be at the fuel rail?

Ours is slow like that but not as bad. I replaced the spark plugs, fuel filter, air filter and PCV valve recently and it did not help the starting one bit. It did help with acceleration and general smoothness though.

I agree that the problem is fuel delivery. Do these have a fuel pressure regulator? Could it be weak injectors? Since you have codes for both banks it does sound like something in common like a fuel pump.

BTW, how did you figure out how to embed that movie?

Yes they do have regulators, could be a leaky injector as well. My pump has been replaced.

As far as the video I linked it from my photography site the embed code is like VCR instructions so it is a little hard to explain.

I just did a 3 can Seafoam treatment, and cleared the CEL. Tomorrow I will try starting it to see if the starting problem improves. I will resolve this issue and let everyone know eventually.

My problem started when the engine threw a code for cylinder misfire.
I then had the injectors pulled and rebuilt and then ended up with this problem.
The weirdest part of mine is that if the car sits for more than a couple days then it cranks perfectly... If anyone else has more info on this please pass it on.
One thing to look at if you have the tools is that when I had a shop look at the problem, they put a fuel pressure gauge inline on the fuel rail so you can watch the pressure when starting the car. They said the fuel pressure would spike, then drop, then come back slowly which results in the start of the car. However, they didn't have any solution. So, I am stuck with the problem.
One thing I notice too is that it starts faster if I pump the gas pedal.....

Anyone else have any thoughts?

Well that is a bit different than mine in the way that the longer mine sits the worse the problem is. Every morning when I start mine it will start like the video but if I stop and get gas on the way to work when I go to restart it will start faster like it has more fuel. I am thinking that it is a fuel pressure problem or leaky injector. I do not think that the 3 can seafoam treatment and smoke show that followed last night will have fixed the problem however it was fun and probably helped a bit with the CEL issue.

One or more of your injectors are cracking open due to heat soak from the hot engine temperature. This is bleeding your fuel system and the long start is required for the fuel pump to re-pressurize the fuel system.

I had this happen on my truck. I ended up having Toyota replace all 6 injectors in order to fix it. It was not easy to get them to do it.

Here's a thread that says the fix was a new fuel pump and the psi went to 42.

Another thing to try is a MotorVac which I heard works wonders.

Interesting, however mine is not a heat issue and my fuel pump has already been replaced. I am not discounting that thread at all I want to review it in further detail later when I have a bit more time. I need to start at the fuel rail and check the fuel pressure and work my way back to the fuel pump.
