Long time jeeper, now sliding down the TR4 black hole...

Hey guys, just wanted to introduce myself since i've been lurking on here stealing information the past couple months. Name's Adam, been a long time jeep guy but fell in love with an '89 4Runner while I was searching for a Cherokee to build. I paid too much for it, it needs all kinds of "re-working" from the original builder, but i'm having fun with it nonetheless!

-'89 TR4 / late (98+) 4.3 Vortech / 4L60E / 231C
-SolidAxle D44's, 5.13s, Marlin leafs, Bilstein 5100s, 17" TRD rims/37" procomps

Day I picked it up:

Not sure what the front seats are out of, and trust me the interior is nowhere near as clean as it appears -- the owner sent me old pics..

Two weeks later the 4L60E lost its 3-4 clutches and the SPAL fan relay shit, so I had it fully rebuilt and re-did the fan wiring. The motor runs real strong save for a few small exhaust leaks and running hot (until i flushed the radiator and replaced the thermostat, all good now).

Started gutting the interior for coating. Not sure whether i'll take it and have it sprayed or just Monsta-liner it myself, but I do know that gooey insulation stuff is a PITA! Also pulled out the power windows/mirrors and replaced with manual ones...

Whoever paid the Tennessee shop to build this spent alot of money, but cheaped out on putting in an SYE... :redbrick:

And bought a brand-new LOW PINION D44 for the front, which has helped to create this awesome drive-line angle...:wtf: (Thank god for manual hubs...)

The hydro assist actual is set up allright and works well....though if you look closely, you can see that apparently a bolt that was 1/2" longer was just too expensive! :rockthrow:

And i'm pretty sure the C's are bent slightly from what I can only assume was a rough jump/bounce, but i'll address that later with an axle swap i think...cant think of any other way to fix that front driveshaft angle without swapping to high-pinion...

So I've got plenty of work to do, but now that it's running reliably the first three steps are rear fender cut, paint booth, and bedliner.

Will update with pics, glad to be on the forum, and thanks for readin!

Looks like a killer start! Great looking runner! That front drive line angle looks normal for a leaf sprung toyota.

Oy on the skipping on the SYE!

You could always use wedge shims between the leaves and the spring packs to point the pinion at the tcase. Or cut and turn the knuckles.

Yeah I guess I should've been clearer and took a better picture...the angle at the pinion doesn't bother me as much as the angle at the T-case. The case already sits angled slightly downward from front to rear, so that coupled with the low-pinion front causes a pretty steep angle at the t-case.
