Actually the correct filter for the 96-02 is the YZZG1

The longer filter will FIT, but inder extreme torque conditions, the motor twists slightly in the engine compartment and it could contact the frame or something else and tear the filter open.

IMO the extra inch of a filter isn't going to make a big enough difference to justify the risk.
 
I've been using YZZD1 on my 3.4L V6 and I found out YZZD3 is slightly bigger that is used on 4.0L V6 so I just wanted to give it a try. My dealer does not carry YZZG1. I think both are the same filters but one is made in Thailand and the other in the U.S.
 
Yeah they're virtually the same filter. The D1 also comes with the gasket pre-lubed which is really nice.

D1 and G1 are interchangeable, but I wouldn't go with a bigger filter, just to be safe

You're not going to have a problem putting it on. The problem is fitting your wrench in between it and the frame rail. So tighten it accordingly so that you remove it without the filter wrench if need be.

LINY4Runner, IIRC the engine torques to the right if I am not mistaken. Chances are, people won't stomp on the throttle in reverse. :)

i use the dz3 for my 05 tacoma and the 99 runner buy them by the case from toyota parts dallas best deal i can find ya get 10 for i think it was 38$
