Longest NON-STOP T4R trip.

Ok well im going on an 1500mi trip in December (South Texas - New Mexico) it will take about 12 to 12.hours strait minus food and gas stops. I just wanted to know who all has taken their truck on a trip of this magnitude and how it handled (maintenance wise).

wish I could say I have, or will in the near future!
I wouldnt EXPECT any issues, but would definitely be ready with credit card or cash for that reason shat, its probably as safe as any new american made piece of trash

I have put 17k miles on my 88 this year so far I have not done more than 500 miles at any one trip but, I bet she would go to Cal. from Fl. with no issue:trophy:

ive put on 8k since june and wouldnt ever expect any problems, but i would be very ready for them, since ive already encountered a couple since then.When I was truck shopping, I was really hoping to find one out of town so that I could get a 'mini trip' in flying to it and drivig it back. Welll I am glad i didnt do that. The 1st gen runner is NOT a highway beast, or efficient ( i have 33s), let alone something youd wanna drive cross country without having atleast triple AAA, or the tools, belts AND know how to replace some sh1t.
I could and would go to timbuktu, if I had the spare cash or a credit card to spare for what breaks when it breaks. Oh and fuel. simple safety measures. i just drank a warm swath of witches brew fron one cold ass witches titty.:girl:

Yeah i plan on changing motor oil, diff fluids, belts, spark plugs and wires before i leave. Just replaced valve cover gaskets, all new vacuum hoses, installed a fresh transmission and battery about a month ago and had my hubs greased and wheel bearings done last year. Am i missing anything?

my 4runner is not to good with long drives over about 2 hours. The floor gets super hot, and i notice both the trans and transfercase sticks get pretty hot too. I like to stop every couple hours and let her cool down, then again my runner has 232,000 miles

i've driven from tucson to salem oregon 12 times there and back in 3 different 3rd gens, 2 of which on 33's and have never encountered one problem. But needless to say, still be prepared.

I drove my 95 on a 4 hour drive from Santa Cruz to Santa Barbara a few months back. It handled extremely well. I stuck at 70 mph or lower to be safe. Sounds like you are taking the right prevenative maintenance.

i just drove from the east side of az to santa barbera about a month ago, no problems, kept it around 70-75 the whole time. the fluid change is a good idea to do about a week before your trip for a few reasons:

1) the obvious.. cars run better and more efficiently with clean fresh fluids.

2) while your under the car doing draining and and what not, it gives you the opportunity to inspect, things and possibly find a obvious problem or something that may become a problem in the future.

3) the reason i say do it a week BEFORE the trip is to guarantee that the new fluids are taking well to the yota and there are no leaks... example: the day before a trip i did a tranny flush and discovered that i had a small coolant hose that was leaking (small leak). went all over town looking for a new hose but everywhere told me it would be 3-5 days because it was a specially formed hose (it was). so i said screw it and figured how much could it possibly leak. make a long story short i got about an hour from home before ka blewy and hot (BRAND NEW) coolant went all over the engine bay. i was able to find a hose and jerry rig it to get home, but the new coolant was waisted and my trip was canceled. so that being said if you do things a week in advance you have time to work out the bugs (and get parts apparently)

.. p.s. another funny story, my friend got his oil changed at walmart while shopping for supply's for his trip a few years back. he bought his stuff, got in his car and got on the road. it only took him about 20 min to notice the sever loss in power and then that the oil light had come on... who knows when. he pulled over, car stalled and he called me.. i arrive to find his motor.. well F**ked. it turns out that some minimum wage walmart mech forgot to tighten the drain plug.. fried his porche boxter. oh yeah and because walmart is NOT a porche certified service center his warranty was void.

Serves him right for taking a porsche to walmart for an oil change!! Was he strapped for cash that month or something?
