Well I posted on here yesterday with a 4runner I was looking at, and managed to stumble upon this one today. Keep in mind, 2wd isn't a deal breaker for me, I'm on a college budget so if I ever decided to do an offroad build it would be after I graduated when I can afford something as cash consuming as that.

Without a price, there's not much to say, but in my opinion, hold out for a 4wd.
 
whats with the mis matched leather on the drivers seat? id listen and pass and wait for a 4wd. They can be had for pretty much the same price as a 2wd.
 
I am going to call on pricing tomorrow, and the thing is im just not the biggest offroader, for my current situation it will just cost way to much.
 
It looks good to me. Just follow the good maintenance tips and you should be fine. Get a seat cover if it bothers you. 2wd's are less costly to maintain IMO.
Deerfield is pricey, but deals can be had. Try and hold out until the end of the month for more leverage.

Graduate with as little debt as possible, find a good job (easier said than done today) and then buy your 4wd machine.
 
Stay away from that one. Tires are thin, wheels are beat, no idea what's up with the drivers seat. But got a 72K mile vehicle that's beat. That's a dealer wholesale job 8 days/week. I'm telling you, STAY AWAY.
 
Bad news

This car is something that looks like it would draw you in. But a 4wd is so the only way to go, even not offroading you will find yourself in need of 4wd. Also there is some fishy stuff with this car.
 
From a dealer, because the odometer states 72K they will ask a wild premium for it you can bet.
4WD is always better option unless you are literally the grandmaw that only drives it to church on Sundays and only in good weather.
The drivers seat thing could have just been an accident or something like accidentally slicing it with a box cutter or something, BUT I would not trust a dealership.
Especially if they keep throwing a "Carfax" in front of you and acting like it actually means something.
Carfax is notoriously wrong, will show some things that did not happen and also will NOT show many things that DID happen.
IMO Carfax is virtually worthless, make certain you take the car to a good mechanic that you trust that is the only way you can get a good idea of its true condition and make sure they check all numbers on the body panels to see if any have been replaced.

Overall and in general you are much better off trying to buy from a private party especially if they have good maintenance records to show you.
 
take the advice of fellow members and wait it out.
i bought a 97 4wd with 74k from original owners with all paperwork 2 years ago. paid $6750 after having them replace all the brakes. i did timing belt and impeller right after i bought it so for approx 7k i had a mint 97 4wd... still driving it today with 114k on the clock and its been perfect.

i took the advice of members and waited for that one. glad i did.

This is an important phrase as your current situation could change. 4WD isn't just for off roading, it is also for snow/ice, occasional mud, etc. It appears you are in FL right now, so maybe not that necessary, but if you end up moving north, you don't want to get stuck with RWD in the snow.

Plus, 4WD is big for resale. Even if you keep it for a long time, you can always sell a 4WD beater to someone looking for a trail rig or a rebuild, but who is going to buy a 2WD beater?
 
Well you all are bringing up good points, ill make a push to get the approval for a 4wd (my dad doesn't like the idea because they cost more for repairs if something goes wrong) I go to school in Tallahassee so im not far from Alabama, Georgia, etc which means I could go play around on trails as well.

thats the worst reason to justify a 2wd. there is only a few more things on a 4wd 4runner, cv joints, tcase, front diff, and front d-shaft. 2wd's still have front wheel bearings ect. IMO if you want a 2wd get a car. If you say your a broke student, I understand because Im in college and unemployed, But seriously contemplate a car. I bout a honda civic a year ago and It has been great. It gets 40 mpg, everything is cheaper for it. If you want a 4runner wait for a 4wd version.

Im guessing your pops has never owned a 4wd. If he realized how valuable it is he wouldnt say that

EDIT: it that 97 was $2500 I think it would be an okay deal. Its a 14 year old vehicle.

I agree. The main reason I have a 2WD is because I bought my 99 for the price of a 95 at the time.
 
I would also hold out for a 4WD, wait and look for one, a 4WD will turn up after some searching and it will be worth it.

I agree. How often does anything go wrong with the additional front components? Unless you are wheeling heavy, I can't think of anyone here having a problem they didn't cause.

Oh of course, if I had the money at the time, I'd have gotten a 99 4WD absolutely. OP should hold out, because even though he says he doesn't need it now, he'll want it eventually. Luckily Southern California weather isn't too bad so at least I don't NEED it to get through life.

But, I got too damn sentimentally attached and I'm in for the long run.

Still looking for a 4 cylinder 4x4 donor wreck :) PM me if you find one!
 
Thats the thing, my dad currently drives a 4x4 armada, his previous vehicles were a 4x4 xterra, and a 4x4 Isuzu trooper. He said all of those cars were great. Im sure talking him into a 4x4 4runner is easier than I think it is...
 
The thing to think about is if a 4wd 4runner is 2000 more to buy when you go to sell it the value should stay about the same difference. You really wont lose any money except for gas and if something breaks.
