Look what came off w/my oil plug

I was changing my oil tonight and when I pulled my plug, this piece came with it. Was it attached to the oil pan? I think wally world might've overtorqued the thing when they changed my oil the last time. I re-installed the plug with gasket and it seems to be holding. Should I be worried?

That's a small picture, but it looks like the crush washer. This forms the seal between the plug and pan. You are supposed to replace them everytime you use them, but many skip this step.

That's a crush washer.

IMHO NO! Without it you'll have a leak and the 'crush' design of the washer also provides a secondary function of locking the drainplug. The plug may loosen and vibrate out.

Any autoparts store will have a suitable washer (copper or gasket material is fine). With help from a friend and a cold engine you should be able to remove the plug, have them hold their surgical glove covered thumb over the drain hole while you position the washer. You shouldn't lose more than 1-2 quarts tops. If you use a really clean pan just drain it and funnel it back in.

You should be okay until the next oil change. But I ould probably keep an eye on it once in a while. You'll know for sure whether it leaks or not by the oil spot it leaves on the ground.

:iagree: my last oil change it came off so I ordered a new one from Toyota and came with it. bolt and seal.

When I buy my oil and filter at the dealership, they always throw in crush washers for me.

Change it with every oil change as previously stated.

Like everyone said, NO! Crush Washers crush once properly to create a perfect seal, Once undone, it is no good no more. Will you be fine until next oil change, prolly. it might be a small detail, but it's these small details that make a difference in the long run.
