Haven't been around 4 awhile. My son thrashed the other runner so it sits awaiting engine work. This popped up for sale about 2 hours from me so I went for it couple weekends ago.

It cranks and runs, little chain slap. Makes a horrendous noise up from on the right side and lacks power when it warms up. The turbo is on the left so maybe a bearing in the front? It will be a slow process as I'm in Atlanta attending school during the week.

I'm hoping to make this my final go to vehicle for life. I'm 54. Wouldn't mind changing this to a 5 speed and have the stuff but my offroad use will be minimal. I also have dreams of an OM617 swap but not on a oem turbo. Digital dash works.

I am considering changing the windows to manual. They are both off track and a mess right now.

Thinking about getting it on the road and driving it some as I improve it. Looking for advice and suggestions.

Thought I would ask a couple questions:

Whats the reliability of these automatics and cost to rebuild. Upgrades available, bulletproofing?

The shift lever is sloppy left to right?

Parts recommendations from ENGBLDR to get road worthy. I may pay someone to do it as I don't have time right now.

It has 187K on it so I am thinking if the compression is good I should ride a while. I wouldn't drive 6K yearly as I have many more expendable vehicles.

As with all these they are run hard and put up wet with little maintenance. I would tackle rebuilding the front end bearings and such on a weekend. Anyone have a parts list?

Wow that 87 has been beat to crap. The CT20 is a known weak point on these things.
has potential though,

For good info on the turbo system this forum is a good source

Thanks, ordered the bushings. Going to change fluid this weekend and see what kind of issues this beast has. Have all hoses coming and tune up items.

I have all my stuff coming to arrive this week to work on her. Drove around 40 miles in her. Cleaned up pretty good. Still have to clean the inside.

I'm not so sure the turbo is working. The gauge reads funny. I got my solenoids for the tranny off ebay. Seller said the 2wd 4wd are the same. It shifts only by manually doing it and does not downshift out of 3rd. Brakes suck and she is slow. For my investment I am very pleased.
Sorry about the profanity on the hood. Bad blood between guy I bought it from and PO. I am using the DNJ drivers steel side timing kit, DNJ water pump. I have read about the turbo timing cover having an additional hole for the oil pump to pump. I ordered a double steel guide set, oil pump, and timing cover from amazon for 75 bucks(CNS I think) but plan on using my oem cover and oil pump if it looks OK. Will just order a passenger plastic guide off RA and hang on the the other timing kit. Thoughts on the pump etc. I downloaded and printed the timing instructions.

Fuel gauge

Doesn't work, any ideas on that. The filler tube doesn't sit right so the tank may have been changed?? It was flashing like it was full but on filling the low fuel light is now on.

The tranny solenoids were the weak link in these trannies. Had to replace them on an 87 I had and it worked great after that. I only use timing kits from engnbldr with metal backed guides. Make sure and drop the oil pan and clean out any pieces of the old guide that might be in there and the pick up screen. If you are doing the timing, make sure and do the oil pump and water pump while your at it. Just a heads up on the timing cover. Use the spare cover you have to put the bolts into when you remove them. Makes it easy to reinstall them in the correct places since there are different length bolts.

If you decide to go with manual windows please let me know I would love to buy your window switch. Mine got broken and I have no longer can roll down my windows!
