Looking at 4 runners. Need some advice.

Whats up all? Yes I'm new to this forum but I've been a member of the TTORA forum for about 2 years now but since my question is about the 4 runner I figured I would jump over here and ask the experts. I just need some general advice and info. I'm selling my Tacoma back to Toyota because of the whole frame issue and the dealer that I'm going to have a 06 4Runner SR5 4wd for sale and it's exactly the color scheme that I like and I believe the price is right. It has 27K miles on it and loaded for the most part and they want 21,9000 which I could probably get it for 20 or 19. The only concern I have is that it's not the Sport or Limited edition 4Runner that has the upgraded suspension, rims and tires and also the hoodscope. I know that the V6 is enough motor and better on gas mileage as well so that doesn't concern me. Do either of those models come with the rear diff locker? I don't believe the SR5 does and I really like it, I have it on my Tacoma. Thanks in advance. Any info would be appreciated.

My 2005 4Runner is a V6 SR5 has a center differential locking feature which can be engaged when the vehicle is in four wheel drive mode. This locks the differential for improved traction in slippery or off-road conditions and is a great feature. I believe the Tacoma has the rear diff lock but not a center lock. Rear diff lock may have benefits for towing while center lock is probably better for off-roading.

Bottom line is I think you would be very happy with any model of 2006 4WD 4Runner.

4th gen 4WDs don't have a rear locker like the Tacoma. It does have a locking center dif.

The 4Runner also employs ATRAC on the F & R axles to provide limited slip. ATRAC uses the brakes and the ABS to slow the spinning wheel. It's no locker but it's pretty impressive. I don't know if the Taco's have that or not.

And rear diff lock is better than center diff lock off road but the 4th gens are still pretty capable with just the center diff.

I love this topic. Open Rear, LSD Rear, Locked Rear, always with open front Diff

Vs the Toyota Center Diff Lock + ATRAC

Its completely subjective

Perception becomes reality

Which is best?

In my opinion it always depends

I think the fact that so many of the manufacturers have migrated to the Thorsen Center Diff Lock speaks for it self - it is amazingly capable.

Yes in certain circumstances a Locker rear is better. I have a freind with a ARB locker rear, LSD front 1999 Bronco, with a 351 V8, it is a beast - 2 weekends ago on a trip he blew the front LSD up, sheered off a front universal joint. Then needed some heavy machinery to get it out of the creek it broke in, nothing short of a Catipillar could pull it out. Not saying a T4R could have gotten out, just that a rock solid system can fail (I helped build that truck)

It took me some serious thinking to get to my (old army truck mechanical mind) around how ATRAC, VSC and the Center Diff Lock works - its anti intuitive

But now I understand it, I love it - for moderate to tough 4X work I belive its great. For Rock Crawling, not so hot, go get some lockers

Flame away detractors...

:)

all the best

Joe

My 2 cousins have 4th gen tacomas (a 2000 and a 2004) and I rush harder lines than them, even though they both have rear lockers.

We're not doing anything crazy, but ATRAC is pretty capable. Try get a test drive off road

Offer no more than 19K.
gas is high and dollar is weak.
Keep in mind 91 octane is/ or nearing $4.00 per gallon
so fuel cost should be similiar to the V8 annual fuel cost.
