Looking at a 2000 Limited, need some advice

Hey folks,

I'm looking around at 3gen's right now, and had a few questions:

1. What price should I expect to pay private party on a 2000 limited w/ elocker, in good condition with 50k on the odo? (KBB values aside, i'm trying to get a feel for what folks on this forum have paid)

2. What should I be looking for in particular? My main concerns are no rust, CVs, tires, and leaks (tranny, oilpan, etc), other than everything being in good condition as well.

I'm taking a look at one tonight, a 2000 ltd with 47k, 1 owner (good to check maint records), and snrf... im praying for the RR diff button and two tone paint, but who knows :D

Bought my '00 Ltd about 10 months ago w/ 54k miles. Paid 18K out the door. This was in a trade though and the 4R included the extra cost of a 100K warranty. It had some minor cosmetic issues, but other than that, nothing. And it's run fantastic.

All options except heated seats on this one.
 
Bought my 00' SR5 with 60K one year ago from original owner who was a Female School Teacher. No cosmetic damage at all and all service records for 16K.
 
I bought a 99 ltd., rr dif lock, 90k miles, every option available, last Sept. for $13,900. It was a 2 owner,like new cond.,had records and roadside assistance /1 year warranty. I grabbed it the day it went on the lot.
 
Bought my 00 Limited with 82K Friday for 13,850...excellent condition, RR diff lock, black with beige 2-tone, leather, power everything...talked him down from 15,500
 
i know mine isnt a limited, and its not a 2000, but i thought i'd post just to add another piece of comparison. i paid $23k for my 2002 sport edition 4runner with 53k miles on it in july 2005 from a toyota dealership in virginia
 
I believe that your location (or that of the vehicle) makes a difference.

In the mountain west, these puppies are marked up as compared to a similar vehicle in the plains.

Paid 18,000 for 2000 sr5 4x4 perfect condition 75,000mi from the dealer with a warranty.

Most people are really right about the whole location, location, location thing. I know you've visited kbb.com, but have you tried edmunds.com? They are a tad more comprehensive along with giving you a TMV (true market value) for the vehicle in your area. It's a great site and I used it everyday when I was hunting for a T4R.

I am in CA and I bought my 1996 SR5 4x2 for $8,500. The asking price was actually $7,995, but I had to out bid someone else if I wanted the vehicle, and I really, really wanted it. It has the sunroof, running boards, leather, tow, and is the 3.4 V6. Amazing condition considering it has 117k on it.

As far as what I feel is most important when purchasing a used vehicle from a "private party" is well, the interior. :confused: Why you ask? The reason I say that is because the way I see it is this... Someone who really babies their interior "most likely" has really babied the entire vehicle. Now don't take that as a 100% fact. Just go to the dealer and see "immaculate" vehicles that look good, but really are stinkers.

When I testroad 4runners for 2 weeks I saw about... 5~7 a week. Some looked great in the pictures, and just horrible on the inside. But the ones that really made an impression were the ones that had a clean, well taken of interior. Of the 4Runners I found, the ones that had the best interiors were also the best overall condition including transmition smoothness, quietness of the engine and quality of ride. Perhaps it is a coinsidence, perhaps it is a good initial observation of how well the automobile has been taken care of, and for how long.

Again, depending on the condition, and location will your $'s differ. Check www.edmunds.com along with www.kbb.com to help you with your search.

Thanks everyone for your replies... the funny thing is that I can't seem to find any 96-00 ltd models with a diff lock below 100k - i've been searching to this point without even acknowledging price...

its funny, but everytime i call asking about a t4r, its already been sold... i guess they really are good trucks:D

Anyways, the search continues... if it keeps on going at this pace i might have to get a TLC instead!

Another datapoint for you... I just found my 4Runner this wknd, $15k for '01 Limited, 116k miles plus a remote start & XM radio.

These really are hard to get your hands on... I was looking for a year. People put a lot of miles on them, too, so it's hard to find them under 100k miles. I would estimate a '00 Limited 4x4 would go for at least $20k out here in CA. For some reason there's is a premium on 4runners out here. I almost considered buying from the east cost and having it trucked out, which would still be cheaper... but never found a good way to inspect before buying.

I bookmarked Craigslist search so I could check listings a few times each day. Seems like most T4Rs were sold within 3 days of being listed. CL is a good way to get a feel for prices, too.

Hey folks,

I want to thank everyone here for their help. It was really helpful to hear everyones input when deciding on a truck.

Though its not 100%, I'm going to pick up a '99 TLC in pristine condition (with all maintenance including cv's, timing, starter, brakes recently done) that has been babied, and only has 102k on the odo, with the RR diff... its not as economical as the t4r, but its the best i could find (as a low mile, locked t4r for sale is next to impossible to find).

Ill still be frequenting this forum though -as much as ih8mud.com is the bomb for most stuff TLC, i still like the creativity of mods and solutions for t4r's and i think alot of it is transferable to the TLC.

Thanks again for everyone's help, and i sure hope to wheel with y'all sometime soon!
