looking at a 2000 locked, MT this weekend, what to look at

yep, really goes down to how the previous owner abused them. less common with trucks like ours, but you can always tell if the po liked lots of hard pulls from stop lights and slamming it into second, among other things.

I would have bought this over the locked limited I just got with 217K miles. You aren't going to find anything in Michigan or Wisconsin that isn't a rust bucket even at 145K miles unless it's the rare old man garage kept out of winter deal. Have cash in hand or a nice deposit since it's a dealership. Take it for a test drive, pick out everything that's wrong with it & offer $5000.

How do you like that push button AWD? I really liked it on my 01. not having that will be an adjustment to make

It's nice & convenient. I like having the overdrive off & ETC buttons too but nothing matches the manual for taking off from a red light & accelerating through the gears. You can go in & out of 4hi on the fly with the manual. It feels more powerful than AWD but eats more gas. I'm having fun with the multi-mode but I miss my manual. I actually went into the garage & started up the 3RZ beast tonight when I got home from work. She's a beast compared to the stock limited. The headers & cat back just grumbled nicely at idle. If it's nice this weekend I'll pull her out of the garage & take pics of them together.

you can shift in and out of 4hi with manual trans? awesome, I was afraid I wouldnt be able to do that. I always use 2wd in snow and ice until 4 is absolutly required, like saving my gas pennies

Yes, J-Shifter, less electronics to go wrong. Dude. Forget saving pennies when there's snow & ice out! We have these trucks so we can safely navigate bad weather. Your life isn't worth it when that rear slips out on you. People on this site are too paranoid about driving in 4hi all the time. I've been doing it for 18 years & have had no trouble with my 4wd system. Keep your speed under 40mph when you go into 4hi & you can disengage at any speed. I drive to & from work 38 miles each way in 4hi when it's snowing or torrential rains with my manual. The front only binds up if you turn the wheel too far to the left or right which isn't a problem during normal driving. I think people forget that the 4runner is a tough muther fvcker!

Does the carfax state if it's ever been serviced at a Toyota dealership? My T4R was serviced at 3 different Toyota shops so I played around on the Toyota owners site and set each one as my preferred dealership...and one brought up a load of missing service history!
 
It does yes, just says service record. I have tried the Toyota site for my local dealer, I’ll try the serving dealer and see.

call me crazy but I might pass on this one. there is an equally clean, lower miles 02 that has my attention with excellent documented history and 2" ome/tundra lift. yeah its auto and no rear locker but I prefer the ease of an auto for towing around my hobie cat trailer, I live in michigan and the push button awd is convenient.

I like driving in the woods and such but not sure I would ever use a rear locker much.

You ARE crazy, that truck is so rare & rust free the resale value on it has already bottomed. I bet you could sell it for $5000 5 years from now with 250K on it. While the 02 will be rusted out & hard to sell for 3k with 250K.
01-02's have more electronics to go wrong...brake booster is EXPENSIVE to replace now that we see them starting to fail with age.
GGGRRRRR!!!!!!

Equally clean?? Lets see pics of the 02's undercarriage.
