Looking at a 2003 4runner, questions.

I am looking at a 2003 SR5 V6 4wd. Is the radiator likely to give me strawberry milkshake? I read alot of the head gasket thread and do not see many 2003 on the list. Are the 2003's likely to have the #4/#6 cylinder failure? I read about the 4x4 actuator also. If it works, it is good right? Is there any frame problems from rust in this gen? Anything else to look for?

The 4runner looks clean. Just had brakes and ball joints done. They are asking $7500, but have had it for sale for 9 months. I am thinking $6000 to 6500. Am I dreaming?

My understanding is that all of the early V6's were susceptible to the head gasket problems. How many miles on this one? From what I recall the problems typically start to appear between 130k and 180k.

As for rust, in general 4runners never had the kind of rust issues that the Tacoma line was plagued with. Even though the Taco and the 4runner are on a similar platform (the T120) the 4runner has always been made in Japan and has a fully boxed frame while the US Made Taco has at least part of the frame as a C-channel.

Now, being in Iowa, you might have some legitimate concerns, especially if the vehicle came from an area where they use a lot of salt and/or have a very humid climate. I would do a careful inspection of the frame to look for corrosion.

As for your price, it's hard to say since each market varies so much. If you like the truck and it doesn't appear to have excessive corrosion or other damage it never hurts to make an offer and see what they say.

Do the 4th gen have the same radiator problems? At 140,000 I suspect it is due.

It depends a lot on whether the previous owners used the recommended long life coolant.... Pricey but specially formulated for the engine/radiator to minimize corrosion.... Given that, radiators are not a common problem with 4th gens.... Stuck brakes, head gasket (V6 only), cracked dash and the 4WD actuator are the more common issues....
