Looking at an 06 V6 2WD SR5

Looking to become a first time 4Runner owner and coming from an Audi A3. I found an 06 V6 2WD SR5 with 21k miles in silver. It has a moonroof, tow package, rear air, and third row seating. Internet asking price is $26k which I believe is high. A friend of mine who I used to work with works at this dealership and we have been talking over the past few days. Anyway, he says there isn't room for much negotiation on the internet price as that is already discounted. I looked up the dealer retail on Edmunds and came up with $21,900 and $23,000 certified. He told me that banks use KBB which lists the trade-in on it at $23,200. I figure they gave a couple thousand less than that (maybe $21,000 or so). Is $22,000 not a reasonable offer?

There's always room for negotiation. I know it was internet priced but as an example, my 07 Sport is V8 and 4X4 and MSRP at around $37,500-$38,000(before taxes) and I got it down to around $32,700(all taxes applied). Granted you might not be able to negotiate that big of a difference from an internet priced 4runner, you can try at least 23,000 I would think.

It never hurts to try to negotiate a cheaper price.

As a reference. I paid 31k for an 06 SR5 new. It doesn't have the tow package or sunroof. It does also have aftermarket leather and 10.5" DVD player. Wife's kid hauler for about 18 more months.

I would think that that 4runner would have sold for about 30-30.5k new.

I got a base 05 with 17k miles for 21.5, but it didnt have 3rd row seating or a moonroof. Price on the window was originally 26, then maked down to 24 for a labor day sale.

Should I worry about higher mileage on say an 05 with 45k miles. Seems the 4Runner holds its value pretty well. I plan to keep it for 5+ years putting me in the 100k mile range before parting with it. I know Toyotas are reliable, but I am afraid that if I get something with higher mileage I am going to run into problems early. Looking for your input.

If you're looking at buying a used vehicle my suggestion is get a certified pre-owned.

Dont worry about certification. It doesn't really protect you in the event that something breaks. Either find a pre-owned vehicle that someone already had a Toyota Warranty on or buy a car with less than 36,000 miles on it and add the warranty for about $800 it is worth it's weight in gold in peace of mind...

You are talking about the extended warranty I take it? Is the extended warranty only available for purchase if the car is still in warranty? What and for how long does the warranty cover?

That is correct. It is called Toyota Platinum warranty. You can get from any dealer. There is also a guy that you will find on the board that many praise, named Sean. He works at a dealer and has a deal that everyone talks about. I think his price was aobut $750 for 5 year/100k mile. I tried to email him and call him. He never responded. I ended up getting Lexus Platinum (same exact warranty) from an Acura dealer in metro Atlanta at almost the same price. I also felt better that they were here and there was aslo some scuttlebut on the board that Sean's warranties were poo pood in the SE Toyota Region. I didnt want to take that chance.
