I'm looking at 1st and 2nd generation T4Rs now in Texas and wondering how much I should pay. What I really want to know is if I get one that needs a motor or rebiuld what's it generally cost? What if it needs a transmission soon? If I know what those cost I can decrease what price range I'm looking at if they can't provide proof that it's been done. Also if you're reading this and in the DFW area, who's the best at doing the major stuff, like engines and transmissions.:awais:

There are alot of factors that have to be considered when looking at the price of a vehicle, if you find a 4Runner that you like and is in good condition then it doesnt really matter what you pay for it, as long as you can afford it and you like the truck.
Just make sure you give it a really good once over to identify any problems, If you search these forums you can find alot of tips for purchasing 4Runners.

As for motors and transmissions; I'm not sure because Im sure the prices down there in Texas are less than what I would pay here.
If you do buy a 1st or 2nd gen 4Runner with a bad motor, you might want to consider swapping in a 3.4 litre motor from a 3rd gen 4Runner or 96' and newer Tacoma (I think).
Its an all around better motor and relatively easy to swap as far as engine swaps go.
I was quoted $2000 CAN. for a 3.4 litre (200k kms) and all of the components required for the swap

Good luck with your new purchase. I have not heard a lot about tranny issues. Two things; V6 head gasketand rear window issues. The 4 cyl is one of the best motors around. I have had to replace calipers, rotors, rear seals and bearings, spindle bushings and seals, shocks, fuel lines. I live in salt country which really rots stuff out. I've done the work myself which keeps the cost down.
