Assenmacher Specialty Tools TOY 730 73mm Oil Filter Wrench for Toyota
I have this one. It's very good. Works on the D1 and D3 Toyota filter. Got it on Amaz@n. Will take a ratchet as well as wrench.
Please note, I found aftermarket filters often have one less (or more) flute even though the diameter is the same. So this wrench will likely not work with a lot of aftermarket filters.

I've been changing oil in my vehicles for more than half my life. For many years I preferred the kind you mentioned in your post, but I have been using this kind now for the past 9 years and prefer it:

I think too many folks overtighten their filters. The only time I ever need a filter wrench is when I buy a used vehicle and change the oil for the first time but other than that I just twist it off with my hands.
I can understand the need for one on certain vehicles that have filters in the worst location possible that requires gumby arms.

I used to do the oil filter wrench that goes as a cap over the filter thing. Then I ended up with three different sizes for three different cars, and they don't always fit different brands of the same sized filter. So I got this.

On the four different cars I have tried it on it worked great. I still have the cap type things, but they just gather dust.

I forget that most of you have those funny V6 engines. I always assume the world revolves around the 3rz!!
On the 3rz the best way I have found to get to the filter is through the passenger wheel well. It is a one arm job in a tight spot so only a cap end and ratchet will do. Can't get enough one handed leverage to take it off without. Can't manipulate a strap wrench with one hand. I just go hand tight putting them on but they always seem to be tighter coming off.
Of course I could always crawl under and work from my back on the ground but lets not be barbarians about a simple oil change. I like to stay clean.

It's the same thing for the V6 except the filter is on the driver side .

You can also use your pant belt.
I think I will give this one a try. I have one like it that fits Bosch filters, which I used to use.

I just use my hands. If it won't come off, I use big Channel Lock pliers. If it crushes, I puncture it, let it drain, then use the puncture hole as a wrench.
Sometimes if it looks difficult right away, I just puncture the bottom and let it drain right away. Easier to handle if it's cooled down, empty of oil.

Yup, this is the one I've been using forever. Simple and versatile for all types of filters. I experimented with the fancy self adjusting Lisle wrench type and those only work well when you can position it well.
