looking for a solid cat-back exhaust for my 22RE 87 4runner

So....the cheapo muffler I got at the local "minute muffler" was worth every penny apparently...it's rusted/rotted through where the pipe meets the muffler on the front end. It's Sh!t.

I'd like to replace it this summer/fall with a decent cat back system that will last, has a nice resonance to it, and maybe adds a HP or two :)

I plan to do the install myself - no welding - just hand tools.

Can you guys make some recommendations? I've searched a TON online and foundn little (Bosal, Boral - very expensive) are pretty much what I've found....

LC Engineering. Go with their stainless 2 1/4" kit. If you want a bit of HP then mate it to one of their stainless headers. They are the best on the market IMHO. Not cheap by any means but I don't think you will have to touch it again....at least I'm not planning on having to ever replace mine again.

Everything installs with hand tools.
 
Borla Perfomance no longer makes stainless steel cat back exhaust systems for the 1986-96 4-Runners or pickups whatever Google searches show up are discontinued items still showing on Borla retail dealers websites.

Bosal, Dynomax/Walker, Mariemount (sp?),etc all make aluminized systems that only last 2 years or so in humid climates or regions with road salt from winter snow. Apperently OEM Toyota exhaust systems made by:

Arvin Sango= Sango of Japan /Arvin Industries (now ArvinMeritor)

are STAINLESS STEEL which most people including myself didn't know. So after my personal experience with almost every aftermarket aluminized and regular steel exhaust systems soon in the coming months I am going to purchase a whole exhaust system from:

So...the LC looks great, and 2 votes for..but Sidney seems really against it :(

I think Stainless is the way - I want something I can bolt on and not worry about for a LONG time.

Any other good stainless cat-back systems you guys recommend?

I never had nothing but good things to say LC, That really suck that they are not getting back to Sidney. I bought a number of parts from they over the years, and they have always been very helpful.

Looks like a quality exhaust and I do want something that will last a long time (I will likely be buried in my truck...).

So, looking at this one:

Looks like the actual muffler mounts closer to the cat, with the long exhaust tube trailing toward the rear of the truck? My POS aluminum unit has a longer pipe from the cat, with the muffler next to the spare tire. Does it matter where along the chassis the muffler attached? I'm assuming this kit is designed for 22RE trucks/runners and the fitment is the same underneath for the trucks and 4runners with that engine....should I not assume this?

Also want to confirm - this kit I linked to - it's everything I need from the CAT on back - it doesn't address the pipe from the headers to the cat, right?

All the 22RE 85 (not sure about 84) through 89 4Runners are the same. I looked at my invoice and installed the following:

1041036 - 22RE street header kit
1043012 - 12" long, 2.25" CAT
1042012 - 2.25" Exhaust system

Everything was plug and play except you need to move your O2 sensor to downstream of the header but they give you the wires and instructions to do so.

If you aren't using their header kit, then I'm not sure what pieces, if any, you would be missing. I am sure they will help you with that if you give them a call.

I have placed several orders with LC Engineering and have had no trouble getting them on the phone which is especially difficult at times as we live in England most of the year.

hahahah only one or two :) i love the irony of the California air research board, and its acronym, CARB, the one thing they dont like is the acronym of their name :) she is quite loud, but the throttle response and more power/flow is inscredible. it sounds like a rally car
 
lol...well I'm halfway there, as my current aluminum crap exhaust has rotted out where it hits the muffler, so I get a rattly, deep drone already....and a nice stench of exhause at stoplights with the windows open!

I think I'll opt for a real exhuast in the end though, for legal and personal health reasons :)
 
hahah i will probably think the same way when i get a few excessive noise tickets :) but one guess would be that you aren't a teenager as i am, we like things noisy (trucks, music, girls, parties, everything!! i am told we eventually grow out of it though

Mine too is getting a "highly tuned exhaust leak". Will have to replace it soon. A kid recently commented on the deeper than normal exhaust note, he was going to go to Cdn Tire to see if he could get some "tuned muffeler bearings" for his Corrolla..lol.. I almost felt bad about that one... almost.
Gotmud, are you still looking at moving to Guelph? bringing yout runner too?:D

:D Claire and i are looking at moving down, well she scored a full ride scholarship so she for sure is moving down, i am maybe going so finish my first year of mechainics apprentice then i am for sure heading down!!! and do you reallly need to ask?? of course the death runner of doom would be accompanying me!! lol how much good wheelin is down there? and what does the mechanics scene look like? is there a lot of work for us? what is the darg race or racing scene look like also? thanks buddy, hey in the meantime you should come down to Calgary :)
 
I wouldn't think that you would have too much trouble getting a job as a second year apprentice, having the first year under your belt would certainly help. You might need to get your exhaust fixed to pass the safety though lol ( keeping it in the thread). You don't need to worry about emissions testing as they start with '88 and newer. As for racing, you might want to check out Cayuga, they have a drag and oval track there. There are a few tracks for the stock car racing not too far away. Offroading.... probably not as much as you are used to, at least not within a couple of hours drive if you want rocks. Looking forward to wheeling with you, another Toyota guy in Guelph!!! WooHoo!!!
