Manifold back exhaust system

Time to start looking into another exhaust system. While at the dealer getting my Oil swapped. I asked the Tech to have a look at the pipes. I was advised that i am rotted from the Manifold back.. Thru the Cat and up to the Muffler( it's apparently ok) I was quoted $4300 for the job.

Anyone else Goes through this? I'm guessing that those of you who live in the rust/salt Belt of the NE have dealt with this before. I live in a state where i need the Cat to pass NYS inspection so removing it is out of the question.

Anyone know of any good 4-runner worthy exhaust systems? I am thinking that if i can hold onto the muffler and Tail pipe I can save a few dollars there. I'm told that there are places where you can buy a complete system that will include everything.. I'm doing some research. If anyone has any idea.. send them along.
Thanks.

i'd start by crawling under there and confirming myself, call it trust issues if you must.
i'd bet you could put together a junkyard manifold to cat system for a couple hundred bucks if you dont mind getting dirty. I got the passenger side manifold for 18 bucks at pick-n-pull.

wow you could probably buy a used beater from down south and have it shipped north and remove the exhaust for that kind of money.

I went thru a re-do last summer, engine to tailpipe. I had the frame/body separate @ that point. If your not going to do any of the work yourself, yes it's going to cost quite a bit. if your truck is rusted to nuggets then it's a cut it all off operation and this will also probably make the price go up a bit. replacing the manifolds is a lot of labor.

I was able to find a decent set of manifolds from a federal emissions truck and then purchased an amazon cat, then also a cheap amazon muffler and a decent salvaged tailpipe.

This has worked fine for me so far, it's no where even close to OEM quality but it seems fine so far.

Amazon.com: Walker 53287 Ultra EPA Certified Catalytic Converter: Automotive

I guess it just depends on how much you want to do yourself and that will dictate cost.

Thanks Guys,
I was advised to do the same thing. It's lifted so i can crawl under there and have a good look for myself. I mean i do have a leak under there i heard it starting 2 months ago. I just never had the chance to get under there and see what is what..

Thanks for all of the links. I certainly have some research to do. I happen to live by some pretty good salvage yards. Most of their pieces come from the same neck of the woods i live in. I'll be back in the same situation in a few years. I will see what they have who knows.. I might get Lucky.

Thanks again

Wow, talk about fleecing. I really hope you would never consider dumping $4300 on a replacement exhaust system.

A DIY job will be a lot of work, especially when working on the exhaust manifolds and the frustrating crossover pipe on the back. The rest of the exhaust you'll just be battling rusty nuts but at least there a little room to do it.

Well if i did it would be just under $8k i would have invested in this truck in less than a year..
I have to draw the line somewhere. I received some pretty good and sound advice on this board. I'm going to take a look around and see what i can come up with.

I cannot do this work myself. I dont have the space, resources or the 'know how" Not to mention the time it would take. I wish i had those things but i dont. I live in a townhouse. when anyone here lifts their hood to see if the engine is still there.. magically you get a Notice reminding you about working on your vehicle in the driveway. They have spies...

They probably priced out new OEM everything plus about 5 hours of labor so I'm not surprised by that number. Toyota catalytic converters are insanely expensive. Have you checked with a local exhaust shop? When you said manifold back are they replacing the manifolds? Typically it means replacing everything after said component. Ex: a cat-back exhaust replaces everything after the cat.

I second the suggestion of finding a dedicated exhaust/muffler shop that has a solid reputation.
Having that work done at a NY Toyota dealer will be very painful in area of your wallet.
As also suggested, i’m thinking what you need is everything after the manifolds which is fairly common for a 20+ year old 4TR living in the northeast.
My guess is closer to $1,500-1,800 at a local exhaust shop.

I always spec out OEM but this time it's a tad high in price. I have heard about the prices of the Catalytic converter- normally after someone gets theirs stolen. remember when the west coast had a crime wave of cats being stolen? That's normally when i heard about the prices.

The service advisor "advised" me that i needed a Manifold back replacement. I haven't been under there, so i thought that to mean everything(incl the Manifold) from there to the tailpipe. I haven't been to a local shop yet.

I was only given this great news today. I planned on looking for a decent shop this weekend.Hopefully they can put it in the air so i can see exactly what is what.

This would be the 2nd Toyo TRD exhaust(muffler/tailpipe) that this truck has had. The first one failed They replaced it free of charge.
$1500-$1800 is a lot more manageable than $4k.

Thanks for the replies.

I can't imagine that a set of manifolds would rust away, surely they are still fine. Maybe look at aftermarket. It wouldn't be too expensive that way for 'cats and back'.

I just completed this from the crossover collector flange back a week ago and couldn't be happier with the results. I sourced all of the components and chose MBS Performance Exhaust in Pasadena, MD - some 240 miles from home, for the fabrication / installation. They've got a mandrel bender, which they used to fabricate the transition from the rear cat to the muffler. I highly recommend Andrew at MBS, their work is nothing short of exceptional.

The design is based on a Magniflow direct-fit, CARB-rated front cat and a Borla cat back. Between those, I went rogue and added a short, high-flow rear cat and an additional resonator, all joined by v-bands. I had Andrew modify the Magniflow cat to install an AEM wideband sensor bung and also to cut off the 2-bolt exit flange before where it necks down to accommodate a 2.5" v-band. The Borla cat back comes with an overly long Federal, single cat compliant304 ss input pipe, which was used as donor pipe for interconnection segments as needed.

Components I furnished:

3x OEM exhaust studs 90116–10149 – 2 were needed.
3x OEM exhaust stud nuts 90080-17187
OEM crossover flange exhaust gasket 90917-06086
Magnaflow ss direct-fit CARB front cat 447192 – modified
AEM O2 bung for wideband sensor 30-4008 - TRD SC w/2.2 install coming soon
OEM 2-bolt O2 flange gasket 89466-20020-83
Racecraft Australia 2.5" 316 ss band clamp kit #1
Gesi G-Sport 50025 2.5” 304 ss high output EPA-rated rear cat
Berk Technology ss 2-bolt flange bung for rear O2 sensor
OEM 2-bolt O2 gasket 89466-20020-83
2x ARP 400-8001 ss O2 flange sensor studs
Racecraft Australia 2.5" 316 ss band clamp kit #2
Vibrant 1141 ultra-quiet 2.5” 304 ss resonator
Racecraft Australia 2.5" 316 ss band clamp kit #3
Borla 14659 304 ss cat back

Total cost of components, fabrication & installation was just under $3k.

Yall.. find yourself an automotive performance shop that builds a lot of turbo kits. They'll have a mandrel tubing bender on site.

Have them bend up a system from scratch and tack it up. Dont use some crazy material like T304 stainless and you will come out very cheap.

These systems you guys are talking about for $3-4k.... just...what the... what?!?

We're talking about exhaust systems here right? Not like an engine build? LOL

Around here i'll wager a Engine build would be a lot more than $3k. wish i could go without a cat... but we all here know that simply isn't done.

BD,
Thanks for the reply and the information on the very cool exhaust build. I had Borla on my old VW GTI from like the 90's.... such a fun little car to drive. I'll know this weekend exactly what i have to deal with. We do have a 4X4 shop that i go to.. I'm going to stop there to for suggestions. This is NOT the place to go to save money. I just want to ask a few questions.

that has to include the manifolds

so a walker approved cat for new york is like 250
a gibson cat back system.. stainless...muffler ...pipes...hangers...everything a guy on this forum used to sell for under 400..i think list is at about 700...jasonB ? I think it was. A borla cat back system is under 800
so we are now at about 1k.... a gas station with a cutting torch and a lift could cut the old out and install all the new in maybe 2 hours...like its all pre bent and clamps together...come on....what 20 minutes to cut old off max.
where is 4k coming from ?

there is no way I would spend that kind of money on a exhaust for a 4runner even if it needed a cat...If it needed manifolds...then I would start playing with the idea of headers .

so glad I dont live in a rust belt....or a state that does inspections

Find a reputable exhaust shop in your area (that actually builds full systems from scratch not just a cheapo muffler shop) and have a new system made. Would be in the neighborhood of 6-700$ from my experience.

Thanks for the reply. I guess that you're in AK... what do they treat the roads with there in the winter? Here in NY they have a solution/Salt mix they spray down which is basically Acid it melts and dissolves everything it comes in contact with and if it doesn't melt your under carriage it will crack your windshield if you get too close to truck spitting this stuff out.

I could do without state inspection too.. or the Fee.. It's a grab for the Govt yeah, we all know that..

It depends on what part of alaska a person is in. We are too far inland from any direction to haul salt or salt solutions so if they do anything, its fine crushed gravel. They even rarely do that on the roads, leave it just harcd packed snow, and you better have good snow tires and know how to drive on ice..... but stores etc will gravel thier parking lots. However if your near the ocean then yes they will use salt. You can tell the difference in cars up here , as where they came from....coastal cities or inland....rust or no rust

Inspections...yep glad we dont have them, did not in rural Oregon either ( where I am originally from) but that can be a double edge sword. I see lots of cars, here and Oregon, that should not be on the road, non working lights, bald tires, puking so much smoke...sure its that owners rights I guess...but my safety too when they dont have lights or brakes or slide like crazy in rain or snow. I maintain my cars..so glad I dont have the government telling me what to do every few years with my 4runner. Plus we can make mods and not worry about it. However the troopers can write tickets for unsafe cars...but I think they rarely do, they are spread so thin up here they dont mess with it
