Looking for a Trail Edition

I contacted the dealer closest to me in Oklahoma City and they cannot seem to locate any Trail Editions within a 5 state region. I found some for sale in Colorado and I asked if they could order from them. They told me know. Is that true? A Toyota dealership cannot order a Trail Edition? What kind of dealer can't get a hold of their own product?

Thinking about making a trip to Colorado to pick one up now.

Japan, Earthquake, Tsunami! 4 runners are built in Japan so all that's available in the US is what was on the Lots prior to the quake. Getting a TE is not easy! I live in SoCal and there were only 6 remaining in a 500 mile radius when I got mine 3 months ago.

I thought dealers were taking orders for 2012 by now though but perhaps not! There's numerous threads on the subject of ordering 2012. Check there for the latest info.

Just my $0.02 but I would call the CO dealer. Tell him you need his absolute best price over the phone. If you are good with it, send him $500 (MC or Visa) to hold it and tell him you are going to get a cheap flight on Travelocity or something for a 2 week advance or a last minute flight. You need to be picked up at the airport. Keep your receipt for your plane ticket, and tell him to split it with you when you arrive. Then tell him you want the tires upgraded to Duratracs at no charge. Tell him if he will throw in the prepaid maintenance and the tire protection, you will pay $1100 for the 100,000 mile extended warranty (No Deductible).

BE PREPARED TO CALL A CAB AND WALK AWAY OR TAKE THE DEAL AS YOU AGREED TO ON THE PHONE.

But, I bet they will take it. $32,500 plus TTL on mine was the deal including everything above except the tire upgrade Tire upgrade is only about $250 value. If I had not had such a woody, I would have thought about the tires (I still kick myself over that)

Good Luck, AND GET MOVING!!! The fact that you posted it makes other guys interested and it may get bought out form under you.

So let me get this straight, you think that a dealer is going to
a) split last minute airfare that will be easily in the $600 range
b) upgrade to Duratracs that will probably cost in the $600 range for the dealer, if not more
c) sell the prepaid maintenance with 100yr bumper to bumper warranty for just over dealer cost for the warranty
d) sell a vehicle that is hard enough to find that you are willing to travel 800 miles to purchase at 4k less than starting MSRP

Something tells me that this isn't gonna happen quite like you think it is. If you think that dealer is trying to give away one of the last remaining Trails, and go above and beyond with demands you need to remember something called supply and demand. ;):

There is no way any is going to get a new TE for $32,500 unless it is the bare bones (no KDSS or Nav) version. That might be good for some people, but I'd caution anyone buying a TE to get the KDSS at least.

That trail cost must be seriously region specific pricing (I would love to see the paperwork on that one). You cant get anywhere near that around here (Arizona). The cheapest I have seen is 36k (they even had like 8 of them), and those didnt have many options.

Joined in 2011 and has a 2010, maybe he bought it used? I don't know, but that is below cost for the dealer before all of the add on things he said he got.

A Toyota dealership cannot order a Trail Edition?

You need to find a new dealer then. I ordered my Trail from the factory, no problems. The best I could do on the price was $500 off. Mind you, this was pre-Tsunami.

Anyone else with a TE feel like they have the only one in town? I've had mine for 15 months now and I've only seen 3 others. It's seems so rare that I called my wife and asked her where she was going one day, when I saw a Salsa TE on the road. Apparently, it was the only other guy in the city that bought one!

Looks like the closest one is 500 miles away for you. Post Tsunami has been tough - I got mine for 1k over invoice with a $1000 cashback for my stock wheels and tires, which I used towards an aftermarket upgrade. I was able to find a TE in state and that dealer traded out for one I wanted. If a dealer doesn't already have a TE, the odds of him being able to to trade out for one are much slimmer.

I was just in your shoes. I'm in Houston and the drive there and back just seemed a little too much since I just drove to Denver two months back to pick up a boutique mountain bike (Knolly Delirium). Both Colorado and Vancouver seem to have everything I want. Anyways, so I ended up cutting a deal over the phone on a used 2010 Trail for 34k (before TTL) site unseen. Tack on another $700 for transport and I'm out a total of ~37k after TTL. I could have gone with a brand new 2011 SR5 4x4 with moon roof for around 2k LESS (I actually forfeited my $500 deposit on a Grey SR5 4x4 when I spotted the Trail in CO), but I HAD to have the TE. Supply and demand is a ditch. They are shipping it via truck and hopefully will arrive today. I'm excited :drummer:

This gets a little trickier. I am deployed right now with the military. I will get back in 1.5 months. I also will have to trade/sell my 2011 4runner SR5 (made the mistake of getting 2wd) before I buy it. How will the dealer be able to price my current trade in value without seeing it? I'd be alright putting some money down to hold it if I can figure out how this would work.

The dealer offered $500 under invoice right away for a black with KDSS. I inquired about a Classic Silver one he had but it was gone already :(. I really like the Silver over the other colors, but I could settle for black or Mag Grey.

I started looking for a TE in May and couldn't find one anywhere near Dallas. I talked to multiple dealerships in the area and they couldn't even order one. I ended up scouring the internet for any Trail Edition. I found a new 2011 silver TE in Rhode Island. I contacted the dealer and negotiated them down to $33,700 before TTL. It cost me $900 to ship it to Texas.

From my experience there we a lot more TE in the Northeast than anywhere else. My theory is that the 4wd trucks like these don't sell as well in the NE and so they sit on the lot a little longer. You can also get a decent deal.

I have had my TE for 2 months now and I love it!!!!!

Well worth the trouble!!!!

I'd jump all over that, even though it's not silver (my fave)

Just contact the dealer with the TE you want and they can usually appraise your trade over the phone. They'll need your vin #, mileage, and overall condition of the vehicle. They might want a pic or two as well but explain that you're deployed and too busy serving your country. :50cal:

It's funny, used 4Runners are going for $4k to $5k more than they are brand spanking new around here! No se'

I'm jealous of what you paid for a 2011 TE and your 1970 FJ40! :thumb3:

i drove by Ira Toyota of Danvers, MA a few weeks ago and (because, yes, i am mental and reflexively crane my neck to see what/if any 4Runners are on the lot of any dealership i happen by) saw that they had two Silver Trails for sale...

just checked their inventory and apparently they're still available. along with a Shoreline Blue Trail. maybe shipping one of those will work out for you, Laubage?

fwiw, methinks your "theory" re: 4WD vehicles in the northeast isn't ready to leave the lab, DallasFJ40... ever spent a winter in maine? :wink2:

OK, yea, I left that out. I was going from Dallas to San Antonio. 200$ Southwest Airlines remember it is only one way you might be able to get the guy to play ball. How much were the Duratracs? I thought the Dunflops were around $200 each so I was thinking an upgrade of $200 there.

Plus, my closing was you have to be prepared to walk away or buy it for what you agreed to pay on the phone without the frills and extras. I was just sharing what I got. Now, mine was a 2010 Trail purchased in January of 2010. Had been on his lot for about 9 months, he had some paper wrapped in the car and wanted out of it big time. Just sayin'....dont be afraid to make a deal on the phone and then horse-trade him after you get there...or at least try to horse-trade him.

I live in Missouri and bought a Salsa Red TE. Here's how I did it.

After I discovered the fact that Toyota doesn't sell the TE in the midwest, I contacted Toyota customer service. They said to contact the customer relations manager at my local dealer. I picked one of the largest in St. Louis metro.

Then the tsunami hit (March, if I recall correctly).

The local dealer said they could probably get one on 6-8 weeks if I gave them more than one choice of color. I picked Red first and Gray as second choice. The middle of August they said they wouldn't be able to get one and would refund my deposit or try to get a 2012. The next day they said they had a Gray one arriving in 4 weeks. I told them I preferred Red. A couple days later they said it was going to arrive in 2 weeks, oh, and by the way, the price was going to be $800 higher than we had agreed on.

I told them no thank you, and called a dealer in Denver. I asked if they had one coming in, and if not, could they check their allocation list to see who in the region was going to get one so I could call them. The salesman checked and, lo and behold, they had one arriving the following week. They matched the price the local dealer originally quoted. I now own a TE.

The moral of this story is: If you want a TE in the midewest, either be VERY patient, or figure on dealing with someone NOT in the middle of the country.

Congratualations on your new TE (you've had it for a few months now). It seems to me that if you are persistent, resourceful, and patient enough, good things will happen. Sometimes it's difficult to resist settling for something less then what you absolutely want in order to get something new into that garage or driveway. I have a red TE as well and absolutely love the color. I think it's one of the colors that not only looks great when the sun is going down but actually looks good in the bright sunshine as well. I've seen a few other SR5's and Limited editions in the area but have yet to see another Trail around here, and I live in the Northeast where supposedly the availability is higher.
