Looking for Mechanic in Charleston, SC

My 2000 4Runner and I just recently moved to Charleston, SC. Does anyone know of any good mechanics in the area.

I took it in to the toyota dealer for an oil change. It took 2 hours and they tried to tell sell me a new ac idle pulley. I know they're full of it because I just had a 90K maintenence before I moved and all the belts were changed. I called my mechanic in California and he said he would have notice if it needed replacing.

I can't stand car dealers.

i live in charleston too and would love to hear of a good non-dealer toyota mechanic. the one I used to know has gone back to work for west ashley toyota.

you didn't say which dealer you went to but there are 2 nearby...over my 15 years being a toyota owner i've been screwed by both dealers certain times and treated fairly by both dealers other times. usually they're OK but $$$ always.

say, did you just drive from CA? you could actually need that idler pulley...especially w/ new belts if they were the slightest bit too tight for that whole trip. Good luck...and welcome to Chuck!

I was referring to West Ashley Toyota. I'll let you know if I find a good Toyota mechanic.

Yes, I drove the 2500 miles from CA. Thanks for the advice I'll keep an eye on the pulley.

Not just for Charleston, but AAA.com should have a list of approved and recommended mechanics in your area.

Also Tom and Ray of the radio show Cartalk on National Public Radio has a database of mechanics with honest recommendations from real people on their website at cartalk.com under the mechanic x-files.

why not just change oil yourself? i'm sure there's a DIY step-by-step with pictures to change your oil. if not, i'll make one for you. :
