Looking for new tires...HELP!

Hi everyone! New to this site, but have owned my 4R for 7 years now. I have a 2003 V8 sport....got a 2.5 inch OME suspension lift at SLEE in Golden, Colorado. I've been running BFG A/T 265/70/17 tires on my stock wheels. I would like to upgrade the aggressiveness and size of my tires (especially since it's lifted)...the wheels I can keep the same or upgrade as well. So....I REALLY like the BFG mud terrain KM2 tire! I really wanted a 285/70/17 to fit because it would give extra width and 1" height....but the tire guy says it will rub (285 too wide)....This tire does not come in 275's. The 265 sizes the tire comes in are all the same height as my current tires. What do you all think about a 255/80/17 or a 255/85/16....these would both be 33" tires (1.5 inches taller than my current tire) and just 0.4" more narrow? Would they look cheesy?

I am not sure if you can fit 33" with only a 2" lift. I have 305/70/16 with a 3" lift and I had to do a lot of trimming and it still rubs. Check out the lift / kevlar tire thread for pictures.
 
A 285 still barely rubs with my brother's 3.5" WITH a 1" body lift after trimming. The body mount (luckily rounded there) rubs at sharp turns in parking lots.

This could be something to do with the backspacing (3/4" farther out) or even the squareness of the Cooper M/T as well.
 
1st time post..

I have a 2007 4 Runner Sport Edition V6 Stock 17" Rims, no lift or modifications... I'm looking to throw a set of BF Goodrich All Terrain AT's on the truck. Standard tire size for the truck is P265/65R17 and I want to go LT265/70R17.

osubeaver, did you have any rubbing or clearance issues with the 265/70's without the lift?

Does anyone out there have 265/70's BFG AT's without a lift? Any issues?

With stock offset you will rub on the control arm/spindle for sure. You would need spacers and if you use those you will be rubbing even worse on the body mount and lower part of the fender area. It will fit as long as you're not scared to trim/hammer and use spacers or aftermarket rims with a bigger offset. Chances are it will still rub a little :shrug:

A lot of members have those tires with no lift, the BFG ATs sometimes scrub slightly because they have a more squared shoulder whereas most other 265/70s fit fine. Check the lift/tire thread or just google 265/70R17 BFG (or BFG AT*)

There are a lot of members running 265/70R17s with no lift and no rubbing. They are the same width as stock tires, just about an inch taller. If you add wheel spacers to the 265/70s there is a good chance they will scrub, I know because mine scrubbed on the fender, mud flap, and bumper with the spacers but not without. No body mount, spindle, or control arm scrubbing though. Without the wheel spacers 265/70s fit better.

I haven't read anyone complain about body mount/control arm/spindle rubbing until 275 or wider tires were added.

I was referring to the larger tires mentioned. I'm running 265/70 on a 2" lift with factory rims with no rubbing ON THE STREET. Off-road is a different story and without the 2" lift it would definitely rub. The inside of the tires are extremely close to rubbing on the spindle. They rub the spindle when aired down. Anything wider on factory rims without spacers wouldn't work very well.

Sorry, sometimes I assume everybody takes their 4WD vehicle off-road. ;):

I had no rub with the 265/70/17 BFG all terrain tires. I am going to test fit the 255/80/17 tires tomorrow. They are almost the same width and only an inch taller. Guess the only way to find out is to try! Thanks for posting. :)

I had no rubbing at all on my sport 2003 runner 4x4 with the BFG a/t 265/70/17's before the lift. Thank you all for your input! I will let you know if the KM2 255/80/17's fit. If so, I want a roof rack like Blair B's...it rocks.
 
When you say "no rubbing at all" do you mean just driving around on the street? I don't think mine would rub on the street either.
 
I believe that anything larger than a 32" tire will still rub even with the 2.5" suspension lift. You will be surprised how much even just 1" more space will be a problem. The type of tire will make a difference as well. MT's will rub more than AT's due to the design. Spacers will eliminate rubbing on the suspension components, but you will still rub on the splash guard and inside fender well trim, especially when you make a turn, or turn while in reverse like backing out of the driveway. I had to do alot of trimming, and more trimming, and then some more before I finally got it not to rub, and it still did some until I went with the 1.5" body lift. If your toe and camber are slightly off from one side to the other, you may find one side rubbing and the other one fine.

I have several wheeling buddies that have the KM2's on their Jeeps and they love them. I think my next set of tires will be the BFG AT's though simply because of the road noise. They still perform acceptable on the trails.

The best thing to do is to upgrade your wheels as well as tires. The OEM wheels just don't provide enough clearance for anything wider than 265. FJ take offs are a good option or look for 8-8.5" wide wheels with 4.5" backspacing from the aftermarket. This will keep your wheel tire combo in the best location for the least amount of rubbing on the inside or outside.

As for the 255 tires, they are a good less expensive problem. They do not eliminate rubbing but reduce some of it. With our trucks its as much a tire width issue as it is a tire diameter issue - different places begin to rub as the size increases.

The one drawback about the 255's is the look from the front. They do not fill out the frontal area as well as a 285.
 
Thanks for all the replies. I have a set of 265/70/17's on order that will be installed this coming weekend. I called all over the place for best pricing, surprisinly Costco was the cheapest I found .. $241.99 per tire, that includes mount and balance. They made me sign a waiver because their "book" said standard size tire was 265/65/17. They tried to talk me out of it and pushed a michelin M/T instead.... told them to go scratch and order up the BFG AT's 265/70's. They get strapped on Saturday, I'll follow up once they are on, along with a picture. Thanks again for the replies
