Looking for Opinions

I posted this in my build thread, but only got one response... hoping to get more exposure on this question, with a new thread dedicated to it, specifically.

So, I have a line on a 99 V6 5speed, which apparently has a good hatch, good doors, and fenders.... and a beige interior.

I'm thinking of snagging it, as it's the same price as I would pay for just a hatch, and I'd be getting all kinds of parts with it. Also... considering putting the 5speed in my truck... but it has 400, 000kms on it.

What do you guys think? Rebuild the tranny, put it into my truck, and use it as a parts truck? Or just get a hatch?

As these trucks become older, it's going to be harder to find parts for them... and as always, I'm thinking long term.

What do you guys think???

If it's cheap and you have the room, I say pick it up. As far as the 5 speed goes, that's a good amount of miles so a rebuild wouldn't be a bad idea.

If you have room and wife don't mind the junk yard look go for it. As they get older more end up in junkyards making parts more available not less.

I've got lots of room... and can tuck it away in the back corner of the property, where nobody would see it.

I would say, if the price is right buy it.

IMO the best thing to do is make a comprehensive list of the thing you would like to change/upgrade/fix on your current vehicle and cross reference that with it with the new ride your thinking about buying. How much can you get out of the new one (meaning part) to get you closer to the end goal of your current ride. Mine, for instance, had a slew of things on the interior that a missing and or broke. I would be better off finding a donor vehicle, if the price is right, and gutting it. I could try to hunt down EVERYTHING that needs replace, buy it at the right price and spend the time figure out shipping or pick it up. Blah. Ya follow?

As far as the tranny goes, I think that is more personal preference. Do you want a 5speed (don't remember reading it above)? If so, that adds to the value of the vehicle for you. If not, you will have to figure out a way to get rid of it. There are a lot of pieces and part on T4R's that fetch a pretty decent price (at least in the NW) so you may be able to part it out and make a few dollars, AND get your parts you want or need.

Keep in mind, one mans junk is another man treasure.

I would greatly like to have a 5spd.. it was something I wanted in a 4Runner when I bought the truck back in 2004. That being said, I'm not sure if it's within my skillset to convert it and rebuild it.

That being said, it may be something I'd be willing to pay someone to do for me.. if it were done right.

Anyway, the price of the truck is $800.00. The price of the brand new hatch I also have a line on, is about the same price.... so I'd rather get the complete truck... if I can. (again... if this seller ever get's off his ass on selling it...lol)

I would pick it up, especially if you have the room. Im hoping to find a similar situation, it would be nice for parts and also the reference.

I think the biggest reason I could never get 'land' is because I would just fill it with cars like that.

Soooooo... If you have space and can tow. Absolutely go get it.

If nothing else. Pull your parts, drop it off at the Junk Yard, pocket a few pennies.

At this point, I don't think it going to happen. The seller isn't very motivated, I've been waiting for 2 days just for him to send me pics of the interior and body panels.

Guess I'm still on the hunt!

Just recognize a '99 hatch in a '98 is not plug and play. You will have to transfer your rear window relay and rewire the whole thing with your '98 harness. '99 was the crossover year to the new-tech rear control for windows, locks.

I'd still buy it assuming the guts of my '98 hatch are salvageable..

Durk's got it right. If you are thinking of terms in a parts vehicle, lump them into 3 year categories for parts:

1. 96, 97, 98
2. 99, 00
3. 01, 02

Obviously a lot of parts are interchangable (electronic components are the exception), but if you stay in those years you'll find almost everything is plug and play. Also, there's more parts in common between groups 2 & 3 than in 1 & 3, meaning there's a lot of 99-02 parts and only a few 01-02 only parts.

I'll keep that info in mind, when hunting for a parts truck.... but this is the first one I find here since I started this whole project, (repainting my truck).... damn things are like unicorns around here. lol
